Welcome to rootschat, Sean.

It is highly unlikely that anyone reading these boards will know your parents.

However, just for extra information, do you know how long they lived in Scotia Street, and did you have any aunts or uncles?

My great-grandmother Agnes Pentland and her daughter (also called Agnes) lived at 27 Scotia Street (I'm not sure about the 1950s, but they certainly would have been there in the 1960s). Her other daughter Margaret Morris lived upstairs at number 25 with her husband (they were cottage flats). I visited there myself a few times in the 1970s but the only neighbour I remember was the next door neighbour who was around 104 years old! I was quite young at the time.

My great-grandmother lived there until she died in 1979 aged 91.

I'll ask some of my relatives if they remember your family  :)

On 25th November 1914 my husbands great Granduncle John Lauder French, a Wine and Spirit Merchants Manager, and a single man, is recorded as dying aged 45 at 32 Scotia Street Glasgow.

I was just googling the address and this Rootschat subject popped up... Hope you had success

Hi everyone,

I have just started taking an interest in my heritage and came across this great site.

I was born at Glasgow Maternity Hospital in May 1959.

According to my birth certificate, my mother was resident at 4 Scotia Street Glasgow although when I do a google search I can only find Scotia Street in Motherwell.

I live in Birmingham now so not familiar with the Glasgow area. Can anyone confirm if Motherwell would be classed as the Glasgow area or was there an actual Scotia Street in Glasgow it's self? If so any information about it's location would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Scotia Street in Glasgow was located two streets east of St Georges Cross and ran from Shamrock Street, northwards to Grove Street.  The street and much of the surrounding area was demolished in the late 60's/early 70's to enable a section the M8 to be built.

The attached reference is to an OS map of the area https://maps.nls.uk/view/82891722 (https://maps.nls.uk/view/82891722).

The easiest way to locate Scotia Street:-
Start at the bottom right (SE) corner of the map and find Cowcaddens Street,  Follow this northwards to the major Y-junction with New City Road.  Follow the latter westwards and you will reach St Georges Cross.  Information in Para 1 then applies.

Thank you so much Istrice, for the info and the linked map.

Well that explains why I was unable to locate Scotia Street then. At least I know the general vicinity of where Scotia Street was. Just a pity it's somewhere beneath the M8 motorway as it would have been nice to visit the actual street.

Looking at side by side maps, part of Scotia Street was where Oakgrove Primary School sits today
