Title: Benjamin Holliday born about 1797 in Frome Somerset
Post by: drmjgould on Friday 18 May 18 00:27 BST (UK)
Hello, Does anyone know anything about the birth of this relative of mine who was born in or near to Frome in about 1797. He married Caroline Carter in Shoreditch & died in 1861 in Stepney, East London. It would be great to have his birth date, baptism date & at which Church, & names of father + mother. I have lots of details of his life in London, but none of his birth & family in Frome. If anyone can help me with info I would be very grateful, Michael

Any possibility that he married twice, and that this is the birth of a daughter from his first marriage?

from IGI

Susannah Holloday christened 23rd August 1812 at Wesleyan Methodist, Frome, Somerset
Father Benjamin Holloday, Mother Betty.

Alternatively could this be a sister?

Hello, Thanks for your suggestions. On various genealogy websites [Ancestry, FindMyPast & FreeReg] I have found quite a number of Hollidays [or near spelling variations] in Frome from around 1750-1850 but no direct evidence of his birth details. In the English 1851 & 1861 Censuses he is shown as being born in around 1797 in Frome, Somerset [at the time living in East London & working as a tailor]. However it has been very difficult to find any direct evidence for his birth/baptism, I have even wondered if his baptism was done just before his marriage to Caroline but have found nothing. He is one of my direct descendants so I am very keen to find out his birth/baptism details. Any further info or thoughts would be most welcome. Kind regards, Michael

He married Caroline 2.2.1818 and entry shows he was a bachelor.

One of the witnesses was a Sarah Holliday

I have found numerous Sarah Holliday's in Middlesex around the time of Benjamin & Caroline's wedding. I am not sure whether this could be his mother, sister, cousin or other relative! I'm perplexed

Have you tried http://www.sdfhs.org

They found a 1795 baptism in  Rodden ( a parish in the hundred of Frome) for me.

I haven't been able to find Benjamin's birth, but there are a couple of snippets that may be worth following......

There is a Thomas Holliday, born c. 1794 Frome living in London and easily traceable on all census, he and his wife Elizabeth (possibly Vickers) were baptising children in Stepney with his occupation given as a tailor.

The only Somerset baptism I can find is a fair distance from Frome....Benjamin Holliday, bapt 3 Apr 1796 at Lydiard Tregoze, s/o Thomas and Mary.

There is the following marriage.... Benjamin Holliday, Taylor married Betty Chapman, both otp,  by licence, with consent of parents at St John the Baptist, Frome, 13 Apr 1754. Whilst they are most likely too old to be your Benjamin's parents, it is interesting that their daughter Susannah Dredge (Holliday) was baptised in 1812 at the Methodist Methodist Church in Frome at the age of 52.

This would imply that this family were nonconformists and there may not be baptisms records available.

Hi Jo, Thanks for your interesting suggestions. I am following up on Thomas Holliday [on ancestry.co.uk]. Regarding baptism at Lydiard Tregoze, I don't think that is my BH as there are a number of Holliday's in that area that remain there when my BH is in East London. With the non-conformist idea that is certainly a possibility, though not carried on in BH or Thomas' life in London [from their BMD church details]. Getting back to Thomas Holliday I hope to do more research on him to see if I can find any concrete links with BH. Again many thanks for your input on this, I am very grateful & would welcome any further thoughts from you, best wishes Michael

Hi Michael

This is a hell of a long shot but they sometimes pay off.

I have Holliday's on my tree but they are from Martley in Worcestershire & years ago I met up with the(thought to ne)last surviving member of that line in the village of Martley & she gave me a family tree that her father had compiled & his information was that they came from Badgeworth in Gloucestershire & I proved this correct by many weeks of research at Gloucester record office. I wonder if any of the Holliday's from Badgeworth migrated to Somerset to obtain work as Ive only researched the Holliday whose line leads to Worcestershire.
I hope you can make sense of my ramblings.

All the very best

Phil

Hi Phil, sorry to take time to get back to you, tied up with other brickwalls! Could I ask you for some of the timeline to your Holliday's on your FT. I have noted there were quite a lot of Hollidays [& name variants] in Frome, Somerset & in Somerset more widely in 1750-1850. The problem is that there are a lot of missing BMD data, possibly partly due to Non-Conformist membership where they don't do infant baptism etc, & possibly missing registration files. Hopefully what data is there will find its way onto the main genealogy websites soon & be easier to find - hope, hope. Look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, Michael

Hi Michael

my line of Holliday's in WOR is from about 1825 - about 2015 when Norah Holliday Holliday passed away - but the place my Holliday started (Badgeworth GLS) was in the late 1700s if my memory serves me correct - I will check on this & get back to you when I can as I'm at my local library & don't have any details with me & the memory aint what it use to be

All the very best

Phil

ps I know its clutching at straws expecting us to be researching the same line (or part of it) but you never know with this hobby do you

I don't know if you have seen this site:

http://www.fromeresearch.org.uk/

It does have a considerable amount of information on Frome families but the search link doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

It mentions another group, the Frome Hundred Group, to which you will need to subscribe.

This group has some members who have a considerable knowledge of families in this area.

I found this site:

http://www.fromefamilyhistorygroup.co.uk/links.htm

The Frome Museum can provide information on local families too.

I have ancestors from that area and have seen the name of Holliday/Halliday in some of the villages surrounding Frome.

Looking at the Family Trees on Ancestry for this person indicates that no one has succeeded in tracing his baptism, or parents.

Have you looked at the names of his children to see if that has any clues as to the names of his parents?

Jo.

Hello Jo

Thank you for you post about Frome FH with suggestions. I apologise for not getting back to you before. I did contact Frome Family History Group about BH, & they kindly did some research for me, but to no avail. They did take quite a few weeks over this [due to issues beyond their control], hence why my reply to you has been so long. I continue to try various tactics to break through my brick wall!

Thanks for your help, best wishes, Michael
