Hi peeps
System did an update today and I can't get past an error message saying that

HELP! Please
Thanks

Hi STG...I really feel for you...after the latest update the day before yesterday my photo Editing Software Elements V. 14 now doesn't work and it would seem Adobe can't fix it either from what I have read >:(
I hope this solves your problem for you:

I'm afraid it doesn't. I fail at the first hurdle "Open File Explorer". My screen doesn't show it. There's no search function, no list of programs, none of the function keys have any function. Nothing. There's only one icon - Recycle Bin - but the only option with that is Open, and when I click Open it says I'm asking for a function that's not available.
Am completely stumped.

So how can you shut down?
By pressing the Power button. Nothing else works!
-
I personally would try an automatic remote restart.
Switch the computer on. If nothing happens after about 2 minutes, switch it off at the "Wall socket" not at the power button, and unplug it. Leave it for 1 minute to clear the memory and reconnect the mains cable and switch it back on. It will try and upload 10. If it does not, repeat the action 2 or 3 times. Microsoft should pick up the error, and initiate a remote startup. Basically, you are acting like you have had a power-cut.
That's what I had to do after the first 2018 update.

Wow.... not good!
I'm looking at Way 1: Enter Safe Mode when you can’t boot normally but have never had to do it!
Press the power button to turn on your PC, then hold the power button down until PC shuts down automatically (about 5 seconds) . Repeat this more than 2 times until you see the Preparing Automatic Repair (see below screenshot).
Note: This step is aim to bring up Preparing Automatic Repair screen. When Windows doesn’t boot properly, this screen pops up and Windows attempts to fix the problem by itself.

You are already holding the power button down until PC shuts down automatically (about 5 seconds) .
It says.... Repeat this more than 2 times until you see the Preparing Automatic Repair (see below screenshot)

Does pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL together not take you to another screen with the option to sign out (among others), or at the bottom right a power symbol (as well as others) which should give you the option to shutdown? You will probably need to press all three for a couple of seconds rather than just momentarily. Sounds like your login profile has been corrupted or renamed by the upgrade. Is there another login account setup on the PC?
Pressing the power button runs the risk of corrupting windows further, but if all else fails there isn't much else you can do.

Usually when I switch the system on, after a few seconds of the HP logo, up comes "Welcome SmallTownGirl" and a space for me to type in my password.
Since the update, I often can't get to the login bit, sometimes I can, sometimes I can't.
After an hour or so of turning it on and off, I've now got
We have some updates for you
This may take several minutes
Don't turn off your PC
Please keep your fingers crossed for me.
Nope. Just takes me to the ".... \desktop is not available."
I don't seem to be able to force it into Safe Mode/whatever it's called.

Did you try
Way 3: Start Safe Mode from the login screen
If you can boot to the login screen, you can enter Safe Mode from the login screen. The steps are similar with the steps of Way 1.
1) On your keyboard, hold down the Shift key.
2) While holding down the Shift key, on the login screen (you may call it sign in screen), at the bottom right of the corner, click the power button then select Restart. Then Windows will bring up the Windows RE (Recovery environment) screen.

Glad I saw this thread. I'm having exactly the same problem as STG. I shall try these suggestions tomorrow.
-
OK.
The Shift/Right click the Power icon and selecting Restart worked up to a point.
I followed it through to Advanced Options - Start up settings - but after selecting my user name and inputting my password and it thinking for a couple of minutes, it gave me a message saying it couldn't repair my start up.
I'm now sitting looking at the Reset My PC options which are
1. Keep my Files (Removes apps and settings but keeps your personal files)
2. Remove Everything (Removes all of your personal files, apps and settings)
I back up my personal files every week, but am still going for Option 1.

Yes, Option 1 is probably best for you.
When shutting down...choose
Sign Out
that leaves Windows running with no one signed it
then go Shutdown from that screen.. you have to click the screen and get the Power Icon at bottom right.

System is still chugging away. Up to 90% reset now, so will see what options I get when it's finished.
Thanks again for all your help. I feel I've been a bit like a rabbit trapped in the headlights on this :-[

If it is successful.... do the 2 stage shutdown anyway!
Best of luck!

When it got to 100% the system automatically switched itself off and then back on again. Now it says it's
Installing Windows (now at 26%)
Don't turn off your PC. This will take a while.
Your PC will re-start several times.
So, I'll leave it to its own devices and come back later and see where I am with it then.

Yes you need to wait.

OK, here's where I am:
After a couple of automatic switch offs/switch ons etc, the system came to rest at my login/signin screen, so I signed in. Then got
Hi
We have some updates for you
This may take a few minutes
Please don't switch your PC off
Oh no, I thought, but let it run its course and now I have something that looks vaguely like my regular Desktop.
I have icons called
Recycle Bin
HP Smart Friend
Removed Apps
Microsoft Edge
and along the bottom ribbon I have (from the left)
The Windows Button (that gives a list of programs etc when I click on it, including ones that weren't on the PC when I bought it)
Search bar
Task View
Edge icon
File Explorer Icon (that gives, what looks like, a full list of all my files/folders etc)
Microsoft Store Icon
Email icon
and over towards the right hand all my usual icons and a message under Settings that says
"Your device's diagnostic data level has been set to Full by your administrator or organisation"
So, so far, so good. Phew!
I don't seem to have a Sign Out option. When I click the Power button my only options are Sleep, Shut Down or Restart.
Any advice, please?
STG
-
Do you not have the icons above the Power button?
.
-
Oh yes, I have that. Never used it before, so didn't know it was there.
So, click that then? Right?

Yes Sign Out... this kills all links/shortcuts to your desktop
this get you to a screen similar to sign in screen
click on it and you should get Power Icon, bottom Right select shutdown

Further abreviated to ppl by some users of the term.

Fab!
Is that the way I should always exit then?

It is a better way to exit but I don't always do it.
It's a minor thing but I do it every few days

I just can't tell you how much I appreciate all your help with this. :-* :-*
I posted as much detail as I could in the hope that it might help anyone who was unfortunate enough to find themselves in the same situation.
Think I need another cup of tea now. ;D
Thanks again everyone.

I hope everything works..... basically the update created a shadow copy of your profile, but didn't delete it after update so the computer had 2 of you and didn't know which one to use.
Hence the "\desktop is not available" notice!
Non-Tech explanation which someone will probably try to elaborate on... ;D ;D

A big thank you from me too, a relief to be all sorted.

How did you do it?
-
I used "way 3", holding down the shift key from the sign in page and following your instructions from there, I really am grateful as I thought I was going to have to take it in for repair.

Good to know how you resolved it... Way 3.

Forgot to ask....
Did you have to reset Windows or not?
-
I'm stuck in a Preparing Automatic Repair/Diagnosing Your PC loop and can find no way out of it. msg appears stating Automatic Repair couldn't repair your Pc

I think I had that, which is why I had to go for System Reset.
Good luck. It's sooooooo time-consuming and frustrating, isn't it? But mine is OK now thanks to the help I got here. Not exactly back to it's old self, but as near as.

Good to know you got it sorted! There will be things you have to tweak, I have a few too even though I had no troubles with the update.
-
Not letting me do that. is there a combination of keys ft would from power up?
-
I am getting messages to restart my computer, so looks as though I'm on borrowed time.

Maybe time to Sign Out...then Shutdown.
If you have all your stuff fragmented then good to do a Defrag first................
-
No fragments, and it seems to have worked, this far!

Thanks Hallmark - I too suffered the collapse of my system (which is possibly due to a clash with AVAST & AVG free virus protection software - I had AVG).
My laptop is useable once more - albeit void of software. As I am weeks away from my install CDs it will be a while before I have everything up and running again, but all that I need to do can be done with free software (three cheers for LibraOffice, GIMP, Irfanview, FileZilla, etc). As I had begun to accept a few weeks without my laptop you can imagine how happy I am!. Thanks Hallmark!
-
Hi all,
I write this with some trepidation as I am, by no means, a computer wiz. I had to do a reset on my laptop, some time ago, which was succesfull. When I next ran a security scan, full, it seemed to take hours. The reason for this was that the old version of W10 was lodged in the Temporary files and needed to be removed to free up memory. I seem to recall reading that it may be done automatically after 10 days? I searched the Microsoft Windows forum to see how to do the removal. It's quite straightforward so long as you take care which boxes you check.

Yes that's what happened to one person they couldn't login as Windows had created a "Duplicate profile" the computer couldn't figure out which of the 2 wanted to log in....

You really do need to get out more Malky ::) ;D ;D ;D

That would be 'beep beep'
