John Sawyer, a baker of Margaretting, was summoned for that, being the owner of eight pigs, he did cause them to be moved along the highway, at Romford, on June 16. Frank Sawyer, of Margaretting, was summoned for moving the pigs. Supt. Jones, inspector under the Infectious Diseases (Animals) Act said he was compelled to bring these cases in consequence of the Swine Fever regulations, due notification which had been published. John Sawyer was fined £1 and costs, and Frank Sawyer was ordered to pay the costs.

Personal War Notes
Pt F J Ottley, Essex, Regt., formerly Yeomanry, of the Globe Inn, Chelmsford, writes that he is one of the lucky ones after a rough time. His company was making an attack, and found the Huns were doing the same thing, only with five times the strength, and his company had to give way, suffering heavy causalities in the missing. He says Frank Sawyer, a Margaretting baker, was wounded, and R A Gibbons, a traveller for Messrs. Ridley and Son, of Chelmsford, a member of the Chelmsford Church Institute, and Douglas Newman, of Chelmsford, were among the missing, but as fresh troops were making an attack it was hope they might be saved.

Margaretting
Death of Mr F H Sawyer. After nearly two years of suffering, Lc Cpl Frank Henry Sawyer made the great sacrifice on March 6th. Deceased joined the Essex Yeomanry in May, 1916, and went to France in the following December. He was wounded at the battle of Arras in April, 1917, and taken to Fort Pitt Hospital, Chatham, where he passed away. He underwent several operations, and hopes were entertained that his fine constitution would pull him through. Last Christmas he was brought home, but after two days' stay the wound re-opened, and he was taken back to Chatham. Deceased, who was only 31 years of age, and unmarried, was of a sunny disposition and universally liked in the village. Much sympathy has been shown to his widowed mother, whose elder son, John, joined the Suffolk Regt., lost his left hand in France. The funeral took place on Tuesday at St Margaret's Church, amid every manifestation of sympathy. The Rev. W J Pressey officiated, in the presence of a large gathering. The mourners were: Mrs Sawyer, mother; John and Percy, brothers; Mr and Mrs Orton, sister and brother-in-law; Mr and Mrs John King, uncle and aunt; Mr Will Sawyer, uncle; Mrs Ketley, aunt; Mr R Gillman, Mr F Bedlow, and Mrs Cobb. Others present included Mr and Mrs Learmouth, Mr R M Straight, Mrs Sheldrick, Mr Clift, Mr H Steven, Mr Arthur Brown (late Essex Regt.), Mr C Read, Mr and Mrs Clayden, Mrs Reeves, the Misses Reeve, Mrs Jennings, Miss Jennings, Mrs C Bartrop, Mrs Farrow, Mr P C Brown, Mr F H Ainsworth, Mr H Hart, Miss Tolfts, Mr Jethro, and John Ottley, the latter being with the deceased in the action where he was wounded. There were some thirty beautiful floral tributes from relatives and friends, and the following wreaths from the Chatham Hospital:- "In loving memory, from his ;old sister' and friend, V A Thomas; "In fond remembrance of dear old Sawyer, from Matron, Miss McArthur, Ward 23, Staff, Fort Pitt, Chatham"; "A last token of lover to dear old Sawyer from the "Corner Boys," Fort Pitt, Chatham."

A Margaretting baker Found Hanged
Jury's Expression of Opinion
Yesterday at the Black Bull Inn, Margaretting, an inquest was held before Mr C. E. Lewis, coroner,
on John Francis Sawyer, 47, a baker, who was found hanged dead in his back garden on Wednesday
morning.
The article notes he'd had 3 accidents in the past year which had affected his head. Evidence given by his widow, his son Frank and Fred Bedlow, a baker. It was put to his widow and Frank that had John been taken better care of then he may not have hung himself. There were accusations that John often drank heavily and often assaulted Eliza and one of their daughters.

Former Baker
Mrs E Sawyer, of West View, Chignal Road, Chelmsford, late of The Bakery, Margaretting, passed away at the age of 83. She had lived at Chignal Road for 10 years on her retirement after 50 years of business at Margaretting, where she as held in highest regard. She was of a very generous nature. Two sons and two daughters survive. Her eldest son Frank gave his life in the 1914-1918 War, serving in the the Essex Yeomanry. The funeral took place on Saturday at Margaretting, the Vicar, the Rev E M Behr, officiating, Mourners were: J F and P W Sawyer, sons; Mrs L C Orton, Mrs O Learmonth, daughters; Mr F Bedlow (who has been associated with the family for ?0 years). Mr L C Orton, son-in-law; Messrs J L Orton, J H Sawyer, F Sawyer, grandsons; Miss Peggy Learmonth, granddaughter; Mr H King (Ingatestone), brother. Mrs A Gilman, Mrs T Webb, nieces; Miss Christine Teager, grandniece; Mrs Sargent, Mrs A Francis, Mrs J H Sawyer, grand-daughter-in-law. Others present were: Mrs Southgate, Miss M Clift, Miss C Claydon, Mrs Gentry, Mr W Britton, Mr J Hudgell, Mrs Colbran. Beautiful floral tributes were received from John, Jess, and family, Gert and Len, Hilda and Percy; Olive and Peggy; Marjorie and Jack; John, Stephen, and Marcia; Fred Bedlow, Eva and John; Reg Plummer; Braddy Lockett; R V Driver, Mrs B E Smithers, Mr and Mrs Taylor; Mr and Mrs Sargent and family; Mrs and the Misses Claydon; the Misses Clift; Mrs Gillman; Mrs Bedlow and Gladys; Mr Harry King and family; Mr and Mrs Warder; Mr and Mrs Francis.

A Double Wedding
At St Mary's Church, Broomfield, on the Wednesday, there took place the marriage of Mr Arthur Henry Goodchild, of Cambridge, to Florence Ellen Ketley, and of Mr Thomas Morley Howard, of Grays, to Kate Elizabeth Ketley, daughters of Mr Charles Ketley, of Broomfield, coachman to Mr H C Wells.
The bridesmaids were Misses Annie, Lina, and Alice Ketley, sisters of the brides, and Miss Gertrude Sawyer, cousin.

It looks like Gertrude and Leonard's son, John Leonard, died in 1994 and left a will.

I think this death is a better match than the one Sandra posted, and the birth date tallies with other 'certain' records, that we can't mention. The death in Aylesbury 1972 Q4 is also for a John Henry Sawyer.

Like Sandra I couldn't find any children for Percy and Hilda but assuming the marriage and deaths are correct then they would have both been in their 40s. I can't find a possible birth for Hilda though so could she have been married previously and were there any children? The wills may have some clues.
I haven't yet find the marriage in the Essex records but I'll continue looking.

Great Bentley Wedding
At Great Bentley Methodist Church on Saturday, Mr Hugh Douglas Gibb, only son of Mr Lewis P? Gibb, of Holm Croft, West Mersea, was married to Miss Margaret Helen (Peggy) Learmonth youngest daughter of the late Mr James Learmonth and of Mrs Learmonth, of Colivins Thorington. Given away by her brother-in-law, Mr Alex Mitchell, the bride wore a classic gown of white with gold embroideries; her veil, of Brussels lace, was ornamented with gold leaves and orange blossom. She carried a sheaf of lilies. She was attended by her niece, D**** Sorrell, wearing a picture frock of blue georgette, with bandeau, and carrying a posy of anemones. Mr John Kent was best man. The Rev W S Liddle officiated, and Mrs A Dowman was at the organ.

The article goes on to say the brides father is a well known and extensive farmer to came to England from West Scotland 35 years ago.

I don't know how to begin to thank you for your efforts yesterday. I am absolutely blown away....!!!! I have been mostly limited to Ancestry.co.uk for family tree research, and so I don't even understand how/where you got all this information. This is the side of my family tree about which I have the least information, and all these snippets have brought it to life for me!!! I am particularly curious about my great-grandfather, John Francis Sawyer, Frank's brother. My father has told me stories about him and I'd love to know more. As you can probably imagine, I would love to know more about the unmentionable records you hint at. Can you please tell me where to look for them?

Glad it's of use Helen, it's always nice to be able to help fill in some blanks. With a bit of luck it may help locate more relations of Frank's for the CWGC.
As for the 'certain' records, it was a reference to the 1939 Register. Some recordset are under copyright so we're not allowed to post details on RootsChat, and the 1939 Register recordset is one of those. And if we do the moderators will give us a ticking off and delete the posts. However, as Ancestry have recently acquired the rights to the 1939 Register you should be able to locate your various family members fairly easily. If you're not aware, the 1939 Register recorded people's birthdate, rather than age, so it's a useful source to cross check birthdates against birthdates from other sources (eg death registrations).
As for the other records, baptisms are from the parish registers. There are various sources you can find these including FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/), FreeReg (https://www.freereg.org.uk/) and SEAX (Essex Archives) (http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/).
The probate records are from the government probate search service (https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills). Ancestry and FindMyPast also have these records but I often use this site instead, despite me having subscriptions to both of those services.
The birth registrations are widely available but a while back the GRO made public new indexes (https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp) (births: 1837-1917, deaths: 1837-1957) which, for births, include the full name and mother's maiden name (from 1837) and for deaths, include the age (from 1837), details which aren't available in previously published indexes. The site is free to use, you just need to register, but if you've ever ordered any certificates online from the GRO you can use the same login credentials.
The newspaper items are available in the British Newspaper Archives (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/). The BNA coverage varies from county to county but has very good coverage for Essex, so you should be able to find some more items on your various family members.

The funeral of Mrs Mary Ann King, aged 79, who passed away on Feb 21 at "Homeward", Chelmsford, took place at Fryerning Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon. The Rev W J House officiated. Deceased was the widow of the late Henry King, licensee of the Royal Oak, Ingatestone, for thirty-nine years. The chief mourners were: Mr and Mrs King, Ingatestone (son and daughter-in-law), Mr and Mrs Ketley (daughter and son-in-law), Mrs Sawyer (daughter), the Misses E. and J. King, Mrs Gillman, Miss Ketley, Mrs Orton and Miss O Sawyer (granddaughters), Mr P King, Mr E Ketley, and Mr F Sawyer (grandsons). Greetings From Middle East
Mrs E Swayer, of West View, Chignal Road, Chelmsford, who formerly resided for 50 years at the Bakery, Margaretting, celebrated her 80th birthday last week. Among messages of congratulation was one from her grandson (A.C. J.H. Sawyer), serving in the Middle East.

Screen in Church and Cross In Village
Article about the erection and unveiling of the chancel screen in the parish church and the granite cross in the village, in memorial of the men who lost their lives in the war.
Includes the inscription on the cross:
For God, For King , And Country
In ever grateful memory of the men of Margaretting who fought and fell in the Great War, 1914-1918.
