Title: Charles Frederick Portlock
Post by: doric on Monday 21 May 18 19:11 BST (UK)
I would appreciate it so much if any Rootschatter could help me break down a very long standing brick wall.  Every avenue I explore becomes a dead end.

Charles Frederick Schellenberg was born in Sunderland to Eleanor Bulmer and Charles Frederick Schellenberg in 1901.  There was no marriage for Eleanor and Charles Frederick Snr despite giving her name as Eleanor Schellenberg on the child's birth certificate.

After many years I have traced Eleanor, finding her on the 1911 Census married to a George Harrison Portlock. They married in c1903 after the death of George Harrison Portlock's first wife.  At that time they were living in Hector Street, Gateshead, Durham along with George's family to his first wife.  Young Charles Frederick would have been about two years old when they married and on the 1911 Census he appears as a 9 yr old with the name Portlock and listed as son.  It seems that at some point after this, most of the family moved to Cuckfield in Sussex.  Eleanor and George both died there, but I have drawn a complete and utter blank as to what happened to Charles Frederick, which is where my interest lies, as he is the one directly related to our family.

I have even contacted members on another site who share the same interest, but for some reason they have chosen not to respond to my message.

Any help or ideas would be so much appreciated as I think I have explored every avenue open to me, perhaps I have missed something !!

Many thanks,

Doric

Something seems wrong here - George Harrison Portlock married in 1903 to an Ellen Parry - they had a daughter Ivy Portlock, birth reg'd Dec.qtr.1906 Gateshead - mmn Parry (on GRO own index).

So, how can George's wife Eleanor on 1911 census be your Eleanor Bulmer when he married a Parry, and their child together has her mmn as Parry?

Hi Annette.

Thankyou for your reply and interest, Eleanor Bulmer was born in Ryhope, Sunderland c1876 and  used the name Elen Bulmer, Ellen Parry - variations of the spelling of Ellen, but all relate to the same person.

Who was the father of Ellen or Eleanor - what surname did he have?

I see births for her Portlock sons have mothers name Bulmer.
