Title: Baptisms at Finchingfield
Post by: antonymark on Monday 21 May 18 22:43 BST (UK)
Hi there,
I have some burials from findmypast for St John The Baptist, Finchingfield in the 1830s. I found the same burials and a marriage on freereg. Could some kind soul point me in the right direction to look for baptisms for this parish between about 1820 and 1840. Do these records exist? Thanks in anticipation.
Regards, Tony.

It's Explorer. Have no problems at other sites. Bit of a computer beginner and wouldn't know how to add a browser. I'll try familysearch another time and see if they sort their troubles out. Meanwhile SEAX as suggested seem to have images of the registers for those years. It's £10 for 24 hours access which seems reasonable if it turns up the 4/5 children I'm interested in. Just need have a day free to get down to it! Real life keeps getting in the way.
Thanks all for your input, Tony.

Which children and rough dates do you want to know about? Which parents?

Hi nannyj, thanks for your interest.

I am interested in the four Peacock boys at Braintree Union Workhouse, Bocking in 1841. (HO107 Pc331 Bk9 F50 Pg4): William Peacock, 13 (birth c1828); John Peacock, 9 (c1832): Joseph Peacock, 5 (c1836); Alfred Peacock, 4 (c1837). All are described as 'pauper' and all born same county.

There is a death (Q2 1841 Braintree V12 P12) of an 8 year old Thomas Peacock who I think might be a brother. This little boy is buried at St. John The Baptist, Finchingfield on 26 May 1841, abode: Union House, Bocking.

I think their parents may be Peter and Jane Peacock: Death for Peter (Q4 1838 Braintree V12 P21);
and Jane (Q1 1839 Braintree V12 P23). There is a burial for Peter aged 40 on 13 Nov 1838 and one for 37 year old Jane on 12 Mar 1839. Both burials are at SJtB at Finchingfield.

I bought the GRO certificate for Jane which shows that this poor lady died on 6 March 1839 aged 37 at Finchingfield of 'Decline'. Her occupation was 'Wife of Peter Peacock (Deceased). The informant was Mary Townsend of Finchingfield, present at death who signs with her mark.

A Peter Peacock, bachelor married Jane Smee, spinster at that same church on 24 November 1822. The witnesses were Mary Smee and Joseph Martin.

I'm hoping that some baptisms of these boys will pull this sad little tale together.

Any thoughts gratefully received, Tony.

Thankyou so much. And so quick. Do you think I have enough already to put them together as a family?

Non-conformist baptisms at Finchingfield to Peter Peacock + Jane Smee.
Should be on ancestry, etc.

On the non conformist bmd Alfred is baptised at Haverhill Suffolk, which is not far from finchingfield. (Presbyterian.)

Mary Ann 1825
James 1826
John 1830
William 1830

These four all at finchingfield independent chapel.

When I checked the records, all the fathers are Peter, but Williams mum is Jane peacock nee lewsey, Johns is Jane peacock nee smee, although it’s transcribed as smart. James mum is smee also.

Thanks nannyj,

I think that's the 'other' Alfred at home with father Thomas Peacock, weaver and family - mother Amelia on the 1841. Chantry Croft Haverhill. This family have a William and Joseph too although older. 20 and 15.

I have been to Finchingfield and Haverhill. They are quite close.

Thanks again, Tony.

That could be 'our' William. Loads there for me to be getting on with.
