Hello!
I have a James Law, B. 1824 Parsonstown. Joined Royal Engineers 1847 in York, England. Looking for immediate family such as parents and siblings.
Thank you,
Brenda

Religion?
-
Unfortunately I don't know. I searched the 1901 census for that location and there is a Margaret Law his generation listed there. Her religion was Presbyterian.

No problem.
RC registers are online...

Hi
On www.irishgenealogy.ie, there's a few Law family members listed in Parsonstown, including the birth of Susan Law in 1864 to Robert Law and his wife Margaret (nee Hunter)
In 1866 a Robert Law died, age 58.
In 1877 a James Law died, age just 17.
Could this Robert be a brother to your James? If so, was 17 year old James named after his Uncle James, who you're seeking.
Also in the 1901 Census, 81 year old Margaret Law, a Presbyterian - who you found - had 69 year old Clara Hunter boarding, so possibly a relative.

Robert Law and Margaret Hunter were married in Scotland 1843 and came to Ireland 1853

Also bear in mind that Parsonstown (now Birr) was a large Army base and had a transient population of Army personnel.
Many children were born there as their families moved from barracks to barracks.
Just as many children were born in India for the same reason by the nature only of being there at the time.

Thank you Hallmark!
To answer your question about location, it says in the parish of Egglass near the town of Birr.
I have his civil service evidence of age and it says born in Parstonstown.
-
As you can see there seems to be only 1 Law family on records
Robert born Scotland
and your James
Were they siblings is the question.... I suppose searching for Robert's birth marriage in Scotland might reveal something
-
Robert was born in Scotland and James in Ireland with a 16 year gap in their ages. Seems strange, but as myluck! pointed out, maybe the transient nature of the area would explain it. Sounds like I need to get ahold of James' 1850 marriage record in Yorkshire to find out who his father was!
Also, James had several children. None were named Robert, Margaret, etc. Maybe James is a relative of Robert's but not a brother.
-
Maybe they wre maybe they weren't...but investigating might find that out.
-
Absolutely right! ;) I see James' father was William. I'm off to the races!
Thanks for your help!
