Title: Marriage Details but Little Else (Bell)
Post by: Ausigeni on Tuesday 22 May 18 04:56 BST (UK)

Hi,

I've hit a brick wall. I am looking for any information on Elsie May Bell, she married Alan Robinson Sutcliffe in 1943 in Huddersfield West Yorkshire. There are so many Elsie Mays that I'm not sure which family she belonged to. She could have been born anytime between 1903 and 1910 and she definitely died Christmas 1986 in Halifax.

Any help or tips much appreciated!

Have you checked the 1939 Register for her??   Using the free index there is one living in Hudderfield that lists her birth as 6 Dec 1913  :-\

Civil registration for deaths in Halifax December 1986 has Elsie Sutcliffe with date of birth as 21 August 1903

ADDED
Looks like you will have to purchase the marriage certificate to get her fathers name.

Thanks Amondg!

I came upon the 21st of August 1903 but I had the following problems with it, she had a child in 1946, which means she would have been 43 as a first time mother? 2nd problem I had with it was, she was always such a proud West Yorkie and I'm quite sure the birth certificate lists her as being born elsewhere Hull I think, I'll have to check again.

Thanks also Kay99

That birth date would place her at 33 at the time of the birth of her first child, which would make more sense.

Amondg suggested, very helpfully, that I should probably purchase the wedding certificate. Just one more question though, if you marry later, in your thirties, would they still have to list their parents on the wedding certificate?

The marriage cert should list their fathers and their occupations

We can't post details of the 1939 Register due to copyright, but if you can access it the register was updated later with name changes due to marriages

I'm relatively new to all of the deeper genealogical searches but I have found the 1939 register thank you:)

I'll see where it takes me from here.

If she definitely died Christmas 1986 then the birth date given by the family was
upon her death was 21 August 1903.
The family ought to know when she was born.

Please go by what you can verify not by what you think fits best.

If she had brothers and sisters, we can help very parents.

If Herbert Bell, 12 Devonshire Villas, is Elsie May's father, her marriage cert may not provide father's details. Herbet Bell died 1940. But it shouldn't stop you from sending for it.

Re.date of birth on death cert, do you have the death cert? Who was the informant?
