Title: Computer help with keyboard symbols
Post by: lydiaann on Tuesday 22 May 18 09:30 BST (UK)
The weirdest thing has happened this a.m.  Went to do a task and the quote marks and pound sign have disappeared, to be replaced with @ and # (that's using the caps key on the 2 and the 3).  These symbols are also in their correct place on the keyboard; having pressed every symbols key I can, they are nowhere to be seen.  Nothing else has happened that is untoward.  Do I have gremlin?  Am I delusional?  Who am I?

Have you been eating biscuits over the keyboard and a crumb or two has got inside?

Tip the keyboard upside down and give it a little shake to get the gremlins out!

Now come on Millie, who is ever going to admit eating biscuits over the keyboard,or even eating biscuits full stop  ;D

But yeah I've had that problem and when you tip it upside down all sorts of rubbish falls out, including biscuit crumbs LOL

I think your keyboard has somehow reset itself to the US or Australian layout.  Sadly I can't tell you how to fix it, but someone here will know.

Hi lydiaann,

I had this problem not long after I got the laptop, I think I went through Control Panel, then Language, and something else, sorry not much help, but your laptop probably hiccupped somewhere.

Might be better to tell us what windows you are, makes it easier for whoever comes along to help you with the right settings.

Cheers
KHP

Just switching on and off might help.

Google "windows set keyboard layout"  and pick a reliable answer that matches what version of Windows you are using.
For Windows 10 this looks ok, I can't vouch for it as I don't use Windows at all.

If you are using Windows 10 then they have kindly introduced a new "feature" following the recent updates which means you can't delete a keyboard layout. There is a workaround provided (see link below) but it does mean running a PowerShell session or command prompt with admin permissions.

Makes me glad I stayed with Win8.1 :)

The keyboard layout settings in Win10 are very flaky. The laptop I normally use has a US layout, and I switch between that and the UK one (normally when I need a £ sign). The backslash is only present in the US layout, so I normally want it set to match the keytops.

The trouble is that the layout is rarely what I want it to be. It seems to be reset at random. It's currently set to UK layout, but was on US last night, and I have not changed it. It may be caused by Remote Desktop, which I use to control my server. That machine has a real UK keyboard attached.

Thanks for all the suggestions, Chatters.  Firstly, no, I NEVER eat or drink around the keyboard (paranoia left over from my working days) so it's not that.  I tried switching it on and off 2 or 3 times and got fed up with it not responding and just continuing to be bolshie, so I switched it off and left it for a couple of hours.  That seems to have sorted it, now I'm back on it again.  Maybe telling it before the final switch off that it was for the recycling centre tomorrow if it didn't buck up (together with one or two swear words) scared it into submission, who knows?  Anyway, it seems to be okay.  I have to admit that yesterday's switch off was a 'update and switch off' so maybe it was reacting to that.  Anyway, as always, your suggestions were - or would have been - helpful.  Thanks

At least every other day during a 40 year career in computing I told people to switch it off and then back on again. It usually works. It's also good for sewing machines, food whisks, washing machines, kettles, women, children...

I switch between that and the UK one (normally when I need a £ sign).

It is easy to get the pound sign without switching keyboards.   All I do is hold down the Alt key, on the numerical keypad press 0163, then release the Alt key.

Yes, Alt-code works fine, but when I need one pound sign, I tend to need a couple of dozen.

I can get by with most keyboard layouts, but the most frustrating for me was German. Swapping just two of the letters around is just too close to English to get me into touch-typing mode. At least French makes me check each keystroke.

I was once responsible for a program which needed a Hungarian keyboard layout. There are just too many accents to make things sensible on 102 keys. It needed to switch between sets using Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-F2. Luckily I didn't need to define that system, just do the programming to make it work.

Thanks, kiwi, I did not know that one.  I'm still fairly au fait with the F keys (being an oldie who learned how to type properly, I very rarely use the mouse when typing any type of script - letters, e-mails, this post, etc) but that one was new to me and has been stored away for future use.  Now, whether or not it will stay there as I age...but thank you anyway!
