This should be easy.
Thomas Sharp shows on the 1841 and 1851 census;
(Brigsley, Lincolnshire HO107/629/Book 5/Folio: 6/p 4
HO107/2113/365; p 21)
He baptised a daughter (Mary Ann) in 1829, in Brigsley.
In 1851 he is a farmer of 100 acres in Ashby cum Fenby; he was born in Brigsley (2 miles away).
By 1861 his widow (Elizabeth, born 1808 Barton on Humber, 25 miles up the coast) is a Farmer of 157 acres in Ashby cum Fenby.
Substantial people, the sort who leave traces.
And yet I cannot locate his death or burial, not that of Elizabeth.
In fact, they are a brick wall, pre 1829. I have nothing, including their marriage.
Am I missing something obvious?

Hi Bugbear,
I wonder if this might be the marriage?
Thomas Sharp married Elizabeth Holmes 2/02/1826 Waltham, Lincoln?
No trace of their births, several Thomas deaths in county 1851- 61 but nothing in the immediate area.

That marriage looks most promising; I happen to have the following note in my places database:
The villages of Ashby (cum Fenby), Brigsley, Holton Le Clay and Waltham lie within a 3 mile circle :)
Which archive/service holds the marriage you found please?
EDIT; familysearch certainly has it:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NVR3-TQ9
It looks like FindMyPast/"Lincolnshire Marriages" may have the parish record image online.
Shame my sub is Ancestry :'(

I have also found a newspaper report of a death for Mary Ann (baptised 1829);
She died in 1867 and is noted as the only daughter of the late Thomas Sharp.
So I already have the ONLY baptism record that will mention the couple.
(baptism records are often a helpful source of info about parents, let alone
the child...)

Think you'll find that both deaths are recorded as Sharpe - Thomas Sharpe aged 54 died Sept.1852 Caistor and Elizabeth Sharpe aged 74 died June 1880 Caistor.
Caistor the registration district for Ashby cum Fenby.
In 1871 Census Elizabeth recorded as Sharpe.

OOh, that's interesting. FreeReg has always had excellent coverage on Norfolk. I didn't realise it had extended its useful coverage to Lincolnshire, so I hadn't looked there.

This must be his baptism - Thomas Sharp bp.29/8/1798 Holton le Clay, son of William and Elizabeth (per FindMyPast).

The FreeReg burial for Thomas is rather lovely;

Person age 54

Part of my trouble is that I first encountered evidence for his age in the 1841 census.
I put in the (rounded...) age of 1806 in my DB and didn't update it when I got better evidence.

The marriage already mentioned in 1826 shows Thomas' parish as Holton le Clay.

It looks like my brick wall is down, and some good ol' record finding, copying and citing lies ahead of me.
Thanks to all who helped, by pointing me both at records and sources of records.
