Title: Frederick and Charlotte Kingsford
Post by: Lady Mary on Thursday 24 May 18 11:12 BST (UK)
Looking for any information on Charlotte Elizabeth and Frederick Bosworth KINGSFORD. They were early residents of Razorback (near Bombay/Pokeno) Especially looking for their arrival around 1880. They reappear in the UK in 1901.  Frederick owned land around Pokeno but I know little else. Papers Past has no info. other than he was on the Pokeno Domain Board and put himself forward as a representative for a General Election.

Morning Mary.

If you just use 'Kingsford' as your search item in Papers Past, limited to just the Auckland newspapers and the date range you mention, and no adverts, there are quite a number of hits for both a Mr and a Mrs KINGSFORD in the South Auckland area you mention. Particularly to do with Church matters, the fundraising for etc.  There are also NZ coastal shipping mentions, though some of those give different Christian names or initials, but could be related.

Unfortunately as it is also a name associated with gold mining etc, there are a lot of unwanted hits unless the search critera is refined.

My family were in the area at the time you mention, but moved to the Waikato in 1906. However members like kiwihalfpint know the area, and from the open days at the Pukekohe East Church I know that there are others who may be able to assist.

- Alan.

PS
Would Montague KINGSFORD be related because he gets mentions? I have found references to a 6 page will relating to his death 29/5/1942. Also this is a surname with later history in the Cambridge area.

However members like kiwihalfpint know the area.

Yes, I may know the area, but the family may not have settled there permanently. :)

According to The New Zealand Gazettes Frederick Bosworth Kingsford is mentioned as being in:

1880-1881 Franklin
1882          Manukau
1884          Maungatawhiri
1888-1892  Manukau
1890           Waitemata

Yes similar to what Janette has put down. ;D

Added:  Just a side note, the middle name Bosworth has also been transcribed as Besworth.

Minnie,

I am just guessing, if Frederick had his occupation down as Gentleman in the E/R's and had land here, and going by the 1871 Census, where his father had land and employed at least 20 people, I guess he was a Gentleman over there.  He would only have been 20 years then.

But we wait for Mary to answer your question :D

Greeting and thanks to everyone for the helpful information. Some I have sent a personal message to. I am writing a short biography on the women of the Razorback area who were on the 1893 electoral roll in preparation for the 125yr suffagette celebrations in Pukekohe. The roll for Franklin was lost or destroyed so we (Franklin Branch NZSG) are using the 1893 roll to identify those who most likely signed the petition.  I was completely 'stuck' on Mrs Kingsford but thanks to you all I have enough info to proceed. It was hard to search just by her name as most women were/are known by their husbands name and initials.
As a matter of interest Leslie Kingsford their son was  born in England, went to school at Bombay and later Auckland Grammer. He won several scholarships and I suspect did a year at Otago University training as a Doctor. It is possible the family returned to England for him to complete his studies.
Regards,
Mary
