Post by: Jane190 on Friday 25 May 18 22:32 BST (UK)
Hi,

Richard Goddard and Elizabeth Bunce married on the 2nd July 1744 in the St. Peter and St. Paul Church,Wantage. Can anyone help me to find their parents and baptisms? They are my direct ancestors.

regards

Jane

Hi Jane,
They married by licence and the Wilts FHS have issued a CD of Wilts, Dorset & Berks marriage Licences.
The entry reads;
Richard Goddard, 28, Bac, cordwainer, East Hendred,Berks to Elizabeth Bunce, 22,sp,  East Hendred
with Bondsman; William Tuck, Yeo, Wantage, Berks
Dated 2-7-1744 Wantage.
I'll have a look at my EH records to see if they are listed there.

Jane,

East Hendred registers have some bapt. entries and I've found ;
29-10-1721 Elisabeth Bunce d/o John & Sarah.

The only Richard Goddard I could find was a bapt. on 1-9-1709 in West Hendred s/o John & Sarah - if its the correct one then he is older than 28!!

Going back to East Hendred I found these two baptisms;
9-8-1747 John Goddard s/o Rich'd & Elizabeth
23-1-1757 Sarah    "      d/o    "             "
Buried;
14-1-1757 John Bunce

So far as burials go I have these, all West hendred;
30-1-1757 Richard    Goddard
21-10-1766 John          "
30-6-1782 Elisabeth     "
3-7-1786 Sarah            "
6-3-1739 Sarah            "   w/o John

Hope these help.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Amazing! Thank you! Is the Richard Goddard bapt. 1709 in West Hendred the only Richard in the area ? Or in whole Berkshire? Maybe Richard isn’t from Berkshire?

Is there a marriage for John Bunce and Sarah before 1721 in East Hendred,Berkshire?

There is a baptism of John Bunce in 1690 in East Hendred s/o Thomas and Elizabeth. I‘m interested in the maide name of Elizabeth.

Hi Jane,
I'm afraid your out of luck; The earliest marriage in EH for a John Bunce took place in 1760 to a Sarah Woodly. None earlier.
As regards John Bunce; the bapt. entry you have found 10-6-1690 s/o Thomas & Elizabeth is all there is.
The records state there are gaps for marriages between; 1680-1687 & 1688-1694. I presume the marriage you're looking for took place during these gaps.

In West Hendred there are no Bunce bapts or Burials at all, and only a couple of marriages in 1832 & 1882.

No great info for you I'm sorry to say.

PS I did just look in the East Ilsley records but nothing came out there either.
