I have it a brick wall finding out anything beyond the 1861 census for my GGF Benjamin. His parents were Smith Flanders and Martha Flanders (nee Benton) from Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Smith was and Excise/Inland Revenue Officer. Any suggestions for places to look for more information? Thanks

There is a Benjamin Flanders marrying Mary Ann White in Holbeach 1867. They had a child in 1869.
FLANDERS, MARY JANE WHITE

Looks like Mary Ann died in 1870...

Benjamin Flanders may of re married in 1876 Holbeach to either Ann Swain or Mary Welbourn.

Welcome to rootschat
Not sure what you mean by 'beyond' 1861 :-\
Benjamin is with his parents in 1841 at Wingham, Kent HO107 / 1631 f371 p26
Smith bn c1800 at Littleport, Cambridgeshire
Martha bn c1804 Littleport
Benjamin is born c 1841 Aylsham, Norfolk
Presumably you know who he married and what children they had
Who is your direct line from Benjamin, where and when were they born :-\
-
For anyone trying to help
1851 he is still with his parents in Wingham HO107 / 1631 f371 p26
1861 he is with his mother in Deal, Kent RG09/543 f79 p5

The Holbeach Benjamin is a different person he is on census in Sutton St Edmunds, Lincolnshire in 1851 onwards
-
I think Benjamin was in Norflok in 1861 with his mother Martha...

You link shows he is living in Deal, Kent not Norfolk. ;)
Original also has brother Joseph plus a lodger
We really need to know where in the world the next generation from Benjamin where born ::)

Hi and Thank You Kay, Solidrock and Rosie99 for the replies, so quick!
My problem with tracing Benjamin is after 1861 when he appears in the census in Kent. There is a B.F. in Holbeach Lincolnshire but he is not my Benjamin. I can't locate a marriage certificate for Ben though he did have children, my GGF, Benjamin John Flanders, born in 1866, registered in Eastry, Kent and his record is listed on page 155 in the civil births Vol 2a Pg 745. Benjamin John then married Cecilia Nightingale in Kent. I am thinking I may need to order his birth certificate for more information.

I agree with redtonyt - Benjamin John Flanders was the son of Robert Flanders b.1838 Aylsham (elder brother of Benjamin b.1841).
As redtonyt says, Robert Flanders and Sarah Elizabeth Watler did not marry until 1868 by which time they'd had 2 children: Robert birth reg'd Mar.1862 Marylebone (mmn Watler) and then Benjamin John in 1866 at Deal.
In 1861 Robert and Sarah are already living as man and wife in Marylebone although for some reason he states his birthplace as Ely, Cambs.
Mother Martha died in 1863 and Benjamin seems to vanish after then - however, he is not the man you want who is his elder brother Robert.

Thank you very much for the very useful information! It does seem that Robert is my GGGF!

Now something is strange here.
Was Robert widowed when he married Cecelia?
Or is something wrong here with the Robert who married Cecelia?

Hi Trish1120,
Robert (the bootmaker) married Sarah Watler. He was my GGGF.
His son Benjamin John (married Cecilia Nightingale) is my GGF.
Robert John is the brother of Benjamin.
I will need to do some more digging regarding the Familysearch.org information you posted, I am not familiar with that resource, I've used Ancestry and FindMyPast for my investigations.
It is all so interesting!

Hi again EJ,
Familysearch.Org and FreeREG are great free resources.
F/S you have to register to use but it is free to search.
Do you actually have any Marriage Certs of the couples in your Tree?
Trish :)

As Benjamins father Smith was a excise Revenue man (early Customs excise official) Smuggling would have been rife in the Deal and Walmer area, as it was all along the south east coast. Hence his posting there.
Possibly Benjamin followed in dads footsteps and became a revenue man himself. If so he could have been posted to anywhere.
this may bea good place to look.
