Title: School Records Newbury
Post by: janjim on Tuesday 29 May 18 01:26 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am wondering if we could find any school records for young people in school around Newbury from the 1880's to 1890's.

Looking in particular for William Chivers and Daniel New in the 1880's.

Have you checked Berkshire Archives' catalogue?

Checking the newspapers for the period 1880-90 I can see -
Boys' British School
St. Bartholomew's Grammar School
Woodspeen House School
Ashley School
Broadway School
West Street National School
Hampstead Norreys School
High School
Wesleyan School

Some of the above may be girls only!

Okay, Daniel New b. 1876 admitted 1883 yes he is our man.
The other William Chivers was born 1862, so maybe another Chivers family member.

Wondering if there is a Frederick Edwin Lipscombe also admitted to the same school in 1883.
What website did you find for this, would be great to go through to check on other family members

Jon if you are still available to assist, would really love to know more on whether Frederick Edwin Lipscombe was attending St. Nicholas Church of England School around that time.   Have tried Berkshire Records Catalogue, but cannot seem to get any further information. We live in Australia so it makes it difficult for searching.

There are two or three possibles, no middle names, born 1875 and 1890, maybe one 1892.

John, if I can catch you in time before you do further research, my Grandfather Charles Edmund New b. 1876 Newbury, would like to know if he attended the same school too.

Hi Jan,

Is there an actual website I can find more information on my New family, or do I physically have to go to Reading to get the information.  Bit difficult living in Australia !!

The BerksFHS has issued some CDs covering baptisms, marriages & burials which include Newbury St.Nicholas -
Bapts 1530 - 1649, Marriages 1660s -  1830s and Burials (several locations  with varying periods (incl.) St.Nicholas) 1530 - 1969
I believe they do offer a search facility as well which you may find useful.
Their address is;
https://www.berksfhs.org.uk/shop/

Hi Jan,

The records John is quoting are from FindMyPast, which has the Berkshire Record Office's collection of school admission books.  Sadly many have not survived.

Hullo Newbury Chap, good to talk to you again.
We are trying to find family connections, some interesting results have come out, as a result of DNA testing.
We need to go back to Newbury.

Newbury Chap, are you still doing research with the War Memorials and other things connected to War Service.
We are trying to get information on William Chivers service with Royal Berkshire Regiment, shown up in another posting on Rootschat.   Someone suggests that he could have been part time Militia.
