Title: Re: Augustus Edward Chandos Leigh Stanton
Post by: billbir on Tuesday 29 May 18 17:42 BST (UK)
The above was born on 6 Oct 1847 at Willingham, Cambridgeshire. Is name is unusual in that it copies The Hon. Sir Edward Chandos Leigh, KCB, KC (22 December 1832 – 18 May 1915), My interest is that I have a bloodline of Stanton, my earliest Aaron, being located in Warwickshire. However, the ensuing line from the early 1800's has incorporated the name 'Leigh" as a Christian name for both Male and Female, through to the present day. The family always thought that there was some connection with Stoneleigh Abbey Estate in Warwickshire. Now we have the ultimate with the subject being named after the 2nd Son of Lord Leigh, who owned the Stoneleigh Estate. Why would someone from Cambridgeshire, elect to call their son after someone in the Establishment. Is there anyone out there, who may be able to help me crack this family mystery?

First name Adolphus rather than Augustus, I think?  Mother’s maiden name Smith.

Parents were Joseph Leigh Stanton and Arabella Mary, according to the 1 Nov 1847 baptism at Willingham.

Possible baptism at Tipton, Staffs:

2 July 1807

Joseph Stanton, born 7 Jun 1807.  Parents: James and Mary.

This one may well be a red herring, as there’s another man matching these details in later censuses

Hi avm228,
Thanks for your input and apologies you are of course correct, the first name should be Adolphus. I do appreciate the data, but what I am really looking for, is why was he christened, as he was. This reguires some understanding of the Leigh Estate dispute and history. Why was Adolphus named precisely the same name as Lord Leigh’s 2nd son?

Of course, but surely in order to come up with a hypothesis as to why particular names were chosen by his parents you need to identify who those parents were?  If you already knew their identity, you didn’t include the information in your opening post - hence the necessary work to establish the basic facts.  In this case the “Leigh” seems to have been Adolphus’ father James’ middle name too, so you will then need to look at James’ background in turn to see whether there’s any likely explanation for that.

For what it’s worth it seems to me unlikely that Adolphus was named “after” Edward b 1832, who would only have been a teenager at the time of his birth.  The newspapers of the 1830s-1840s contain many references to Edward’s father Chandos Leigh Esq (1791-1850 - later Lord Leigh, 1st Baron Leigh) of Stoneleigh Abbey.  Perhaps he was well-known and the Stantons simply heard of him/his family and liked “Chandos Leigh” as a name combination, with posh/aspirational overtones.  Or perhaps there was a genuine family link evidencd by James’ middle name Leigh.

It is your very last sentence, which is the purpose of my question. My connection is through Edward Leigh Pearson b1811. He is my 2x GG. His mother was Sarah Stanton, hence the link with the Stanton’s. I do not think that it was just a whim to call Aldophus by the full name of Lord Leigh’s 2nd son or that my 2x GG was named Edward Leigh, which was the name of the owner of the Stoneleigh Estate, who died without issue in the late 1700’s and created a huge dispute about the ownership of the estate, which went to the High Court.
