Title: Photo Storage
Post by: linnet27 on Tuesday 29 May 18 22:46 BST (UK)
Hi

Looking for some thoughts/advice on where to store several thousand photos please. Have been using iCloud but getting a message that it is almost full, and don't really want to pay them for more! Thinking of buying an external drive but like the idea of cloud storage to be able to see photos on various devices.

How many photographs on iCloud are you likely to look at?

My first thought would be to keep space on the Cloud for the most important, and put a full set on an external drive or thumbdrives.

I tend to agree with @philipsearching.

Three basic questions are:
- what value do the photos have to you (and what are you prepared to pay for cloud storage?)
- how much time do you want to invest in 'managing your storage'over multiple devices and cloud accounts
- how valuable is 'one access point' set against the costs?

There are other (possibly cheaper) cloud storage solutions such as Google or Amazon. Another type of solution is to have a 'cloud' backup of your harddrive (like Backblaze). This won't be easily accessible but in the event of a crash/fire, it'll still be there.
You can spread your photos over multiple 'free' (but limited) cloud storage accounts (Icloud, Dropbox, Google, Amazon) but you'll need to manage these yourself.
It may be more convenient to have all your photos in one place. If so it's a question of working out how much cloud storage you'll need and what the price is (free + additional space)

Thanks Mike and Philip for your suggestions.  I need to do some serious thinking about what I actually want to achieve!!
