Title: James Moore of Benfleet. Abt 1818-1896.
Post by: hookleg on Wednesday 30 May 18 15:56 BST (UK)
James Moore was a sea captain from Benfleet, but he retired from the sea and went to Walton in Suffolk with his wife Charlotte and his three sons and two daughters and took over the Walton Ferry Boat Inn, often referred to as 'The Dooley'.
Can anyone help with his family I believe his father may have been a William Moore, born about 1775. I cannot find a marriage for his parents so haven't found his mother yet.
James Moore also started to run a four-in-hand wagonette passenger service to Ipswich: this was driven by his oldest son David  James Moore's other two sons' names were George and William, and the daughters were Charlotte and Emma. I have info about them. Many thanks.

The Essex Baptism Index (1538 - 1917) shows the following:

 James Moore

Baptised at St. Mary the Virgin 21/06/1818

 Residence - S. Benfleet

 Father - Abraham (Labourer)

 Mother - Frances

 Could this be your James?

 Jan

Many thanks Jan. I think that it has to be more than a very strong contender.

 Hi,
I've just checked the 1841 census for South St. South Benfleet, which shows Abraham and Frances Moore living with their three children (Liensa, age 12, Meshack, age 6 and James, age three).

Two sons with the first name of James?   Unless James was this three-year old's middle name?

 Jan

If this is your man, then Abraham and Frances had James, Mary Ann d1822, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Louisa, Jesse 1830-1839, shadrach 1832-1836,Meshack george.
There’s a james of susannah Moore in 1837, but no more for Abraham and Frances. Susannah was born 1816 and was Abraham and Frances’s daughter. She died in 1838.

Many thanks to nannyj and Winslass for these leads. I have the family in S Benfleet and I know they eventually went to the Harwich area.

I think that the 1841 census shows the daughter as Lieusa (Probably a misspelling of Louisa). Can't find her on the 1851 census. I have seen a possible 1861 Cawston or Causton connection on a tree, but no firm evidence of a marriage. However, interestingly the Louisa was born in S Benfleet and now living in St Nicholas, Harwich. (District 3 Schedule No 138). Certainly a family connection to the town. Possibly marriage at Rochford 1850. with husband Isaiah Cawston/Causton. Any confirmation would be great. Thanks

That's wonderful cuffie81 thanks so much for all that wonderful info. Do you recommend Familysearch? I have never subscribed, but it does seem to have a good array of records and perhaps is better suited for UK research. I seem to keep coming up with dead ends on Ancestry now.

FamilySearch is free but requires registration. I would recommend it as they hold a large number of records, some are only transcriptions but they also hold a large number of images of records.

Other resources you may want to use, if you're not already, include:

GRO birth and death indexes (https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp)
Free but requires registration. A couple of years ago the GRO compiled new indexes for births (1837-1917) and deaths (1837-1957). Although indexes are available elsewhere the GRO's indexes were compiled from the original registers and the indexes include additional data not available elsewhere. Both indexes include full forenames, the birth index includes mother's maiden name (from 1837) and the death indexes includes the age (from 1837).

FreeReg (https://www.freereg.org.uk/)
Free. FreeReg is a project to transcribe parish registers and make the transcriptions freely available. The number of Essex transcriptions that have is increasing all the time.

Essex Archives (SEAX) (http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/)
Free to search but requires pass/subscription to view images. Parish registers are not indexed. Essex Archives hold a large number of parish registers, which they've digitised and made available online to subscribers. The offer daily, weekly, monthly and yearly passes/subscriptions (http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/subscriptionservice.aspx). If you do some prep. work, so you know which parishes and time periods you're interested in, even a daily pass could be very rewarding.

Thanks again for taking the time to advise. I have mainly researched my Suffolk roots and have left the Essex part of the tree to a cousin. Thought I would take up the reins now and see how far I could get. Will give FamilySearch a go. Cheers

A bit more evidence, if it was needed...

The Ipswich Journal
11 Mar 1893
Felixstowe
Golden Wedding
On Thursday was celebrated the golden wedding of two old and much respected inhabitants of Felixstowe. On the 2nd March, 1843, Mr James Moore and Miss Charlotte Bartlett were united at St Nicholas Church, Harwich. They afterwards lived at Walton Ferry, and have for many years resided in Hamilton Terrace, Felixstowe, where they have gained the respect of every inhabitant. They were visited by their resident sons and daughters, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren during the day, and congratulated upon the happy event. Very singularly, one of their daughters, Mrs Waller, celebrated her silver wedding in America on Monday last, the 27th ult.

Thanks again for that extra info. I really appreciate your efforts on my behalf. I am busy putting part of my tree on Family Search and correcting loads of errors made by other researchers!!

No problem hookleg, glad to help.

By the way, I think James and Charlotte may have had 7 children. Six appear on censuses with them and 2 appear to have died as children. The Essex registers may be able to confirm that one way or another. You may already be aware of this but thought I'd post it just in case.

1854 Q1 - Death: James William Moore; age 8 (born c1846); Tendring; 04a; 149

Also, as Abraham Moore gives his birth place as Takeley in censuses you're in luck, as Takeley parish registers are available on FreeReg, from the Holy Trinity Church website itself (as the local Reverend transcribed the records some years ago) and on SEAX too.
