Post by: ricardoespana on Saturday 02 June 18 16:44 BST (UK)
Hi

I have had to let my ancestry account lapse for a few weeks..serious illness - and I need some help, please.

I am trying to find the deaths of my 1st cousin 4x removed and his wife.

Names - James Barnett and Louisa Barnett.

James Barnett was born in April 1810 - Havant Hampshire.

Louisa Barnett was born Louisa Scale and she was born April 1810 in Chichester, Sussex.

They married in North Mundham, Sussex on 17 Feb 1833.

They had 4 children. The youngest was born in 1837 in North Mundham, Sussex.

Unable to find either of James or Louisa's death - this is where help is required.

Any help is much appreciated

Regards
Richard.

Hi
Just to say thank you for your help...we are putting this query on the back burner for the moment.....there was no help from 1841 census onwards, nor prison registers...they have vanished from soon after 1837..
No worries..
Once again thank you..
Richard.

Hi
I'm afraid don't know where - or if! - you can find the apprenticeship indenture. I guess you would have to be lucky.
The seaman's ticket (which is not the same thing) is on FindMyPast

Likely 1841 Census;

Chichester, Sussex
Pas Ayling, 30
Eliza Ayling, 30
Jas Barnett, 5********
Danl Barnett, 4*******
Jane Cox, 15
Ann Wield, 35

That's a good find, Trish! I wonder who the Aylings were.

There's a James Barnett, 40, from Hampshire, with a wife called Hannah from Essex, and a daughter Harriet, 13, born Chichester, living in Arundel in 1851 (Arundel being Daniel's place of residence on that sea record)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG83-MT6

There's also a mysterious Louisa Barnett about in Sussex, having children with a William Eldridge. They are together in 1841, but did not marry until 1853.
Don't think the marriage is online, but it seems to have been by licence (and the allegation is online, which says Louisa was a spinster).
On the face of it, not Louisa Scale, she is apparently a Barnett, but maybe is a similar age so mention her just in case.

James and Hannah Barnett are still around in 1891, living in Funtington.
Birthplaces James gives in the census are Langston(e) and Hayling Island.
He seems to have died in 1898, age 88. It looks like in the workhouse or infirmary, as the burial at Funtington, 27 Dec, gives abode as Westbourne Union.

But is it the right James?
And a Hannah Barnett is on the same image, buried 1 July, age 81.

So it looks as though you need a marriage for James Barnett + Hannah.

South Australia Passenger Lists
On the Oregon
which left Plymouth 13 July 1851
and arrived Adelaide 2 November 1851
were
James Barnett 40, Farm Labourer, says place of origin Sussex
Hannah Barnett 34
Harriet Barnett 14, origin Sussex

Looks like them? If so, James + Hannah returned!
