Title: Neil MacGregor
Post by: MacGrigor on Saturday 02 June 18 23:07 BST (UK)
Hello,

Neil was baptised in Dingwall in 1819. His parents were Simon MacGregor and Margaret MacKenzie, who married in Fodderty in 1811. Neil was the younger brother of my 3x great-granddad, Alexander, baptised in Dingwall in 1815. I see he is on a couple of censuses in Fodderty, but FamilySearch tells me only his age and parish of residence. Can anyone give me any information e.g. did he marry, what did he work as, any children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren etc, when he died.

I'd appreciate any help!

Adam

Have you tried using freecen.org although I don't know what records they have or what's missing?

I've not heard of freecen.org. I'll check it out. I could only find Neil on the 1881 Census and I think it was the 1861 Census.

As said earlier, have a look at the FreeCEN website, there are quite a few records for the MacGregor family in that area.

For instance....."MACGRIGOR (sic), Piece SCT1841/65, Fodderty Parish - Ross and Cromarty, ED5, Folio-0, Page 15.....

"MACGRIGOR, Alexander........" plus nine others.

The cottages were demolished in the sixties and there is now a field of barley waving in the breeze!

Do any of the censuses Simon and co. appear on indicate what language/s they spoke? I'm not sure when that question was introduced to the Scottish censuses. I'm just curious to see if any of them spoke Gaelic but it's probably the wrong area of the Highlands.

I think the census from 1891 shows if they spoke Gaelic you would need to view the original census on Scotlands People ..The census in Canada 1916  shows speaks English

I spent some time yesterday, in Strathconon, with the Session Clerk of the Contin Church of Scotland who confirmed that the Church Records of his church, along with most other C of S churches, are with the NLS in Edinburgh.

I spent some time yesterday, in Strathconon, with the Session Clerk of the Contin Church of Scotland who confirmed that the Church Records of his church, along with most other C of S churches, are with the NLS in Edinburgh.
All the pre-1855 registers of the Church of Scotland parishes are in the care of the Registrar General (not the National Library of Scotland) in Edinburgh and the contents are available online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

When statutory civil registration was introduced in 1855, the legislation included a power to the Registrar General to collect all the C of S registers for safe keeping, and an obligation on the C of S to hand them over to the RG. Therefore there is no point in going to any Church of Scotland if you want to look up a baptism or proclamation of banns before 1855.

The surviving C of S registers from 1855 onwards remain with the churches.

The Roman Catholic registers, and many of the free churches' registers, are also available online.

The Episcopal Church's surviving registers are either still in the churches or in diocesan, local or university archives.

Just to be clear, is the immigration record solely for Simon or for his whole family? The 1916 census says they all arrived in Canada in 1910.

Looks like he was travelling alone. It appears he was going to his son, a blacksmith, in Alberta.

Men often went ahead to set up a home before families joined them. Arrival dates can be a bit fluid in the census records. I have had a look for Margaret and the children arriving but haven't been able to spot them at the moment. Not all records are on line...depends on port of arrival and date. Also, probably not all records survive, either.

That answers my questions, thanks. Do you know the name of his son already in Canada?
Title: Re: Neil MacGregor
Post by: polarbear on Saturday 16 June 18 23:38 BST (UK)
I'm afraid not and it doesn't say on the manifest. One would think it would have been the eldest but not necessarily. Were the sons all blacksmiths? If not would help to narrow the son down.

I’ve confirmed

a) Neil McGregor did indeed die in 1907
b) Simon McGregor and his entire family did all speak both English and Gaelic according to the 1891 Census

I’ve had no luck locating Neil on the 1891 Census, nor his son John (who registered his death). I haven’t found any census records for Neil either, so I’m not even sure when John was born. I have some ScotlandsPeople credits left over, so if anyone could help me find the census records, that’d be great!

I recently came across this string while researching my MacGregor ancestors with my mother.  Neil MacGregor (we had b. 1821, d. 1907?) and married to Margaret McLeod is my great, great grandfather.  Margaret A. MacGregor who you show having visited Scotland in 1921 and 1926 was my maternal grandmother (Neil's son Simon MacGregor's daughter).  I have fairly good info on what happened to the MacGregors when they reached Medicine Hat.
