Title: Who Do You Think You Are? Series 15, Episode 1: Michelle Keegan
Post by: DavidJP on Tuesday 05 June 18 15:30 BST (UK)
Hi all,

Just come across the fact that the first episode of series 15 is to be broadcast tomorrow!

Details here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007t575/broadcasts/upcoming

It is Michelle Keegan's episode which apparently features a connection to the suffragettes.

Broadcast tomorrow (Weds 6th June) 9.00pm on BBC1, the link above also shows broadcast details for Wales & Scotland!

Kind regards

David

Thank you for that David. I realised that I wouldn't be able to see the programme tonight here in Scotland but it was only when I saw your post and followed the link I learned of the transmission for us WDYTYA addicts north of the border.

Just spotted this, only missed the first half :)
Telly's intermittent, but luckily it worked!

But I have no idea ..... who she is .... what the story was up to this point.

Oh well... better to watch half an hour and not know what's going on than to miss it all :)

Celebrities certainly aren't what they were.

At least this one was different.

Agreed 'celebrity ' is stretching it a bit but she did have an interesting and very different family history.

The church was outstanding.

I was a little confused about this one.  It was advertised as being about the Suffragettes but her Great Grandmother was shown on the census as a Suffragist.  It was assumed that this meant she was a Suffragette and a piece followed about the Suffragettes.

I thought the aim was the same for Suffragettes and Suffragists but Suffragists were not militant and didn't break the law.  Why was it assumed that she was militant and the census was wrong?

I thought exactly the same and some how because Emmaline Pankhurst was the registrar for her grandmother's birth, her gt gran became a militant suffragette!

I suspect the programme was making use of the fact that most people will have heard of the Suffragettes, and that there was the useful link to Emmeline to attach the story to.  I think that not even all members of the WSPU would have called themselves Suffragettes, and probably some women who were not WSPU might have qualified as Suffragettes under the 'popular' definition of the time.

I just did 2 quick searches of the 1911 census using just the keyword 'suffragist' and then 'suffragette', and there looks to be some interesting entries there.  When I have more time I'll look in more detail.  One thing that interests me is how many men may have recorded their wives/sisters/daughters as suffragist/suffragettes.  (BTW don't try 'suffrage' as a keyword - there was a street in Smethwick, Worcs called Suffrage Street! :o )

I suspect the programme was making use of the fact that most people will have heard of the Suffragettes
...also making use of the fact that the subject starred in a series starting on BBC on 5 Jun.

I found the subject & episode boring & once again major leaps in interpretation taken. As well as her ancestor being rightly or wrongly cast as a militant suffragette', her g g grandmother came from Gibraltar 'on her own' but actually with hundreds of other Gibraltarian [?correct word] women with their children. And once again her 'roots' were in Genoa where her 7 x great grandfather was born [and those before him as well] - notwithstanding she has 255 others. And what about the brief glance we had of ancestors from Portugal, Minorca etc? I know they can't be all followed but for the script to say one place is where the 'roots' are is misleading - and to me it obviously was so scripted.

I caught up with this episode tonight on iplayer. I found it quite interesting despite not knowing who this young lady is. I too thought it was a bit of a leap to assume that the suffragist was militant. Good on her though for putting that as her occupation on the census return but, to me,  it does not necessarily imply she was militant. I too have a couple of certificates signed by E Pankhurst.  The informant on one was my great grandmother and I thought to myself, oh wow she must have met Ms P when she went to the Chorlton-on-Medlock registrar's office but I did not question whether that meant my great grandmother was a suffragist or suffragette, why would it? As someone else pointed out it did feel rather scripted.

Agree with comments that it was quite a leap to suppose that the ancestor was a 'Suffragette', just because she described herself as a 'Suffragist' in 1911.
It's even possible that she was oppposed to the Suffragettes, especially as they had very little  support from the more trade union inclined working class.

I enjoyed this programme, like others I'd never even heard of the young woman who was the subject of the programme, it was a change to go to Spain and Italy, and refreshing.
Like others I felt that the poor suffragist was dragged in to the issue, because of the centenary ... As far as I understand it, suffragists, both male and female campaigned for a vote for women, but suffragettes were female and very much more like modern rebel organisations, prepared to use force and violence to attain their ends.

I'd suggest they highlighted the suffragette angle for the 100 year anniversary of females getting the vote

6 Feb 1918 It was called the Representation of People Act 1918.

Subtitles are available on iPlayer whether you Download or Watch Online.

Down the bottom right-hand corner there is a speech-bubble icon which lets you switch them on and off. You can even choose the size of text.

If you watch on a "smart" TV, or a Freeview box, the usual subtitle button on your remote should work.

Xin - I found it! (not very good at symbols.) It is a squarish symbol under the time line at the bottom right. It doesn't say what it is.

I missed the show at the start of the month, how come there have been no subsequent episodes? Is it because of the World Cup coverage?

I'm surprised that so few people on the thread have heard of Michelle Keegan.

She was in Coronation Street for years, then played the lead in "Our Girl" and is married to the TOWIE (The Only Way is Essex) reality TV personality Mark Wright.

So hardly "film star" famous but I would have expected people in the UK to be at least moderately familiar with her.

Having made the series, they broadcast this one as a one-off because there was a Suffragist angle which fitted in with the "Hear Her" theme they have been running.

Never watch soaps. "Our Girl" didn't appeal, and TOWIE appears to be entirely about people who spend their lives having beauty treatments.
So "another actress who's been on telly" is a good description as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't worry me, as I watch because of the stories, not because of the "celebrity". Some of the best ones have been about people whose on-screen personas I actively hate.

Ah, I see....So it was sent out early to coincide with the recent anniversary of female suffrage, hence the yawning gap between it and the rest of the series.

I had been thinking how bizarre the scheduling looked from a conventional broadcasting angle.

Can't really raise any persuasive counter-arguments to your above listed reasons for not knowing who she is. I'm not an aficionado of soap operas such as Coronation Street or Eastenders either. I did watch last year's season of "Our Girl" but found the latest instalment to be dreadfully scripted. As for TOWIE, I am as disinterested in it as I am with any other vacuous reality TV show but I had heard through the grapevine of her marriage to one of its former "stars".

That said, I still recognized the lass from seeing her face on the telly and elsewhere in the media, although I agree this is not at all necessary for enjoyment of the program.
