Title: Rotten Row, Purewell
Post by: JeannieR on Tuesday 05 June 18 22:50 BST (UK)
Hi guys.

I have just arranged a holiday in Dorset, in order to do some family research.
My 3xgreat grandfather, Albert Hardy, was born 1816 at Puddletown. He was a first cousin of Thomas Hardy, having the same grandparents.

He was a Watch and Clockmaker , and his business was based at Rotten Row, Purewell, Christchurch. Number 5, I think.

Does this building still exist ? I am trying to organise a itinerary for us. As I get older, walking about aimlessly, is out of the question. I am longing to get photographs of places my rellies lived.

Many thanks
Jeannie

Rotten Row is long gone I’m afraid, it was just East of Waterloo Bridge.

In 1841 he was in Bridge Street. I think it is possible he worked in an old building which is again East of Waterloo Bridge next and to the right of the secondhand car sales, opposite the Churchill’s Priory Lodge retirement flats.

If you look at a map, the flats are on the corner of Bridge Street and Stony Lane.

I will see if I can find anything else tomorrow.

Jebber.

That is so kind of you. I am very grateful.

We are staying at Poole, for about four days, hoping to take in Christchurch, the Hardy scene, and part of Southampton , where the family eventually settled. I think I am being a bit ambitious re time.....but hey

I have been through my books of old picture, this is the best I can find. The part of Bridge Street previously know as Rotten Row, taken about 1875.

At least it will give you an idea of what it was like. As you can see it was an area always prone to flooding until the flood defences were built.

Jebber,

How kind of you. What a wonderful photograph.

My Albert Hardy died in 1878, so he could possibly be on this. Must get out the magnifier, and check out the ears !

I am very grateful, thank you
