Title: Help with Edmund File please
Post by: Top-of-the-hill on Thursday 07 June 18 22:14 BST (UK)
I am trying to track down the origins of Edmund File, born about 1790. He claims in 1851 to have been born in Elmsted, but I can find no likely baptism. His name is open to various interpretations, but I think I have tried most of them. I suppose he may not have been baptised or they may have been non-conformists. Any ideas gratefully received.

Thank you for that, I had not investigated genealogies. However, it raises more questions than it answers. Born in Elham, baptised in Stowting - I can't find a baptism in either place, and not sure where Monks Horton comes in. There were married in Kingston in 1811.
I am still wondering about a non-conformist chapel somewhere. Do you think the entry on Familysearch could have come from there? (I have never had to deal with chapel records in my family history.)

to make matters worse on dusty doc they give them marrying 12 oct 1811 at Kingston as files
but also eliza ann file baptised 8 march 1812 Kingston.

   That is my Edmund's son.
The baptism registers for Elham are on line, and there is no baptism for Edmund.
"Dusty doc"?? You have lost me there!

Thanks Carole - I think this man is going to remain a bit of a mystery, at least as far as his origins!

I think the familysearch entry may derive from this family

There is a possible marriage in Elmsted in 1771 of a John VILE and Elizabeth Down. This couple have children in Elmsted between 1774 - 1780.

The baptism for a daughter Elizabeth in 1774 has been transcribed as both File and Vile.

Between 1783 - 1788 Stowting a John & Elizabeth FILE baptise three daughters.

I think this is possibly all one family as I can't find a marriage for the Stowting couple or searching for a John File and Elizabeth marriage, but given the proximity of Elmsted and Stowting it seems likely. But I could be wrong.

Doesn't help find Edmund but if this is one family they can possibly be ruled out.

Thanks Claire - there are a lot of Files/Viles all round that area, but as you say, no Edmund. I wonder if he gave himself that name?!

I've checked the Non Conformist registers too but can't see a likely candidate in those either.

I've looked at what children the Vile/File couple had (marriages) - just to see if Edmund pops up as a witness, but nothing.

He may have been illegitimate and his mother married Mr File after his birth and he took the name at a later date.

Hi,
There is this baptism:
Name:    Edmund Philllis
Gender:    Male
Baptism Date:    8 Dec 1786
Baptism Place:    St. Martin, Guston, Kent, England
Father:    John Philllis
Mother:    Elizabeth
Guston is only about 13m from Elmsted so it may be worth investigating.

Elmsted records have been transcribed

http://www.hastingleigh.com/Elmsted/Elmsted-Baptisms-1752-1800.html

It's good to see all the baptisms together.  There are no baptisms for an Edmund between 1752 and 1800.

John & Elizabeth VILE's last child was baptised in 1778.

Have you looked at wills or MIs?

Edmund Phillis - what a good find  :)

I think he married in Hougham in 1813 and was buried there in 1815.

Ages fit the records, and I can only see one Edmund Phillis in the records.

Could be - different parish, different vicar, different variant.

Edmund File did not die until 1856, so not Edmund Phillis.
