Title: CWGC Appeal for relatives of.......Sergeant Alfred Goble - Welsh Regiment
Post by: *Sandra* on Friday 08 June 18 10:50 BST (UK)
CWGC wish to make contact with any family members of Sergeant Alfred Goble - Welsh Regiment - 16487

Alfred Goble, Sergeant-Instructor, 16487, Welsh Regiment. Alfred was born at Worthing, Sussex, the son of John and Mary Ann Goble. He was an experienced old soldier, and had taken part in the Retreat to Kandahar in 1880, under Lord Roberts. He married Susan Douglas in 1885, and moved to Carmarthen many years before the Great War, as instructor for the Royal Garrison Artillery. As soon as war broke out, Alfred was anxious to do his bit once again, and after a period at the Army Remount Depot at Carmarthen, he joined the 15th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, the Carmarthen Pals battalion, on 21 February 1915, which was then at Rhyl. Alfred didn’t go to France with the battalion, but remained at Kinmel Park as an Instructor with the 61st Training Battalion. His health deteriorated under the strains however, and he died in Hospital on Thursday 31 May 1917. His body was transported by rail to Carmarthen, where Alfred was buried at St. David’s Churchyard. He was 64 years old, and left a widow, four daughters, and four sons, two of whom were serving with the Army.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, Alfred Goble's wife was a Susan Goble (dau. of a Charles and Susan).   Whether a relative (cousin?) or coincidence I don't know.   Their childrens births on GRO Index all listed as Goble, mmn Goble.

Alfred and Susan had a total of 9 children, 2 of whom died:

Alfred John born and died Mar.qtr. 1887 Rochford, Essex
Frederick W.born 1888 Carmarthen
Charles Lewis b.1890     ditto
Lydia May b.1893          ditto
Gwendoline Louisa b.1895, died 1899 Carmarthen
Jane Theresa b.1897 Carmarthen
Annie Margretta b.1900 ditto
Albert George b.1902    ditto
James Arthur b.1906     ditto

So at the time of his death in 1917 he had 3 daughters and 4 sons.

Any descendants will have to come from Frederick W. or Charles L. - as you've rightly shown the other children all appear to have died unmarried.

Info from West Wales War Memorial Project - perhaps you would like to contact them with your findings.  ;)

Suspected the researcher inadvertently included Ellen Goble  (the niece) who showed in 1901 as one of the daughters

Ellen Goble also passed away at 75 Lammas Street Carmarthen 9 April 1975 - probate Llandaff 3 July 1975

Fredrick William Goble married Alice E Arnold - September 1914 - Isle Of Wight - 2b 1393

The couple probably had 2 daughters - Eileen N M Goble - December 1928 - Devonport - 5b410

Daughter - Eileen N M Goble - married Terence J Blee - Plymouth 1949 - 7a    13034a

Goble    Gwynneth F    Arnold    I. Wight    2b   1251 - September 1920

MS Eileen Nancy May Blee- passed away 7 April 2009 - Wellingborough, Northamptonshire -

Eileen and Terence had 2 sons 1951 - 1953 both Plymouth - possibly a daughter in Neath 1961  ???
