The 2 records attached show signatures for a William Smith, bearing in m ind that they are 24 years apart could they be the same person?
Must admit I am not at all convinced that they are.
thanks

No, I don't think it is the same hand.
-
I agree with PaulineJ not signed by the same person.

In the second image (the earlier date) I wondered if both names were written by the same person as they are very similar in style. Also the Livingstone in the witness is virtually identical to the Livingstone in the spouse.

The William names are slightly different -- but the Smith name looks very similar in both.
I do agree with shanghaipanda that the groom and spouse names in the Livingstone marriage look to have been written by the same person. Even the pressure on the writing of both is the same.
(Not sure if this helps or hinders in a decision!)

There are distinctive unusual square corners by William in his S's
Looks to be by the same hand to me

I would say they were written by the same person....the "th" is formed in the same way in both surnames with the cross of the t looping to form the downward stroke of the h.

Looking at 'Smith' I would favour the same hand; looking at 'William' I would say probably a different hand.
So I'm afraid I'm not helping much as I'm sitting firmly on the fence. ;D :-\ :(

'William' - Similar in character
With the timing being 24 hours apart - highly likely the same (Smith) William - but macwil makes fair comment in judgment of words William in the signatures.

Thanks everyone, so is the consensus that they were (probably) written by same hand? I know this is not definitive proof of a father / son relationship as a single source, however it is yet another coincidence that ties them together.
