Title: Annie McCrea Born Jan 1847 in Antrim
Post by: TMcCrea on Monday 11 June 18 11:45 BST (UK)
Looking for the parents of Annie born in Jan. 1847, father listed as William. She is a strong DNA match and is probably a cousin of my William McCrea, born 1843 in Ballynure and married to Agnes Blair. His father was also a William.

Annie married John Adair, 18 May 1866, in Govan, Lanarkshire. Shortly after the marriage they emigrated to Philadelphia where both lived until their deaths, John in 1894 and Annie in 1940.

John is also listed in census records as being born in Ireland so I do not know why the marriage took place in Scotland.

Does the 1866 Scottish marriage certificate not list names of both parents? If she died in Pennsylvania in 1940 then her death certificate should also list names of both parents but accuracy depends on what the informant stated as fact.

Are you sure John died in 1894 in Philadelphia? Can't see a death there in 1894. There is a John James Adair died there 1892 and birthplace given as Scotland-

My search for Annie McCrea did not produce the earlier post which I had forgotten.

I have a marriage listing, not a certificate.

You need to look at the marriage certificate to find name of both parents so that you can start searching for the family in Irish records. You will probably also need to see what church records survive in Co. Antrim.

If both father's were named William they are unlikely to be first cousins  ::)

Last night I managed to get a copy of the marriage record, unfortunately, the image quality and the penmanship make it a bit difficult to read. It appears that Annie McCrea's parents were William and
Ann Hunter. Annie was listed as McCrea and her father as McRae.

So far, I have not found a marriage record for Annie's parents.

If Annie was born 1847 then it's possible that her parents married before the time when civil registration of marriages took place (1845 for non-Catholic marriages & 1864 for Catholic ones). The next step will be to start searching for church records to see if you can find a marriage. However, not all marriages survive and of those that do not all are online.
