Title: Probates
Post by: Wendyellen on Monday 11 June 18 18:13 BST (UK)
I have an Oliver Alic Greenslade of Cloatley farm, Hankerton, Nr. Malmesbury in my family tree.  He died 1st February 1965 and probate (the registry was Gloucester) was to his widow Frances Alice Greenslade.  Then on the 14th September 1987 there is another probate (Registry this time was Llandaff) not mentioning his wife's name saying 'administration with will' Llandaff - former grant Gloucester 8th June 1965.
What would the reason be for this please?

It is possible that his widow had not fully completed handling the will, so after her possible death someone else took over.

The most likely circumstance is that she carried on living in their house without having it transferred into her name, when it came to be sold this formality had to be completed.
There are of course other possibilities, she may have relinquished her role as executor due to ill health, but the time gap suggests that there were formalities to be completed after her incapacity or death.

Many thanks for your reply.  Yes, his wife died about 12 months later in March 1966.  One thing I forgot to mention though was that the second probate was in Llandaff, near Cardiff but they lived in the Malmesbury area.

Thank you

Probate would not necessarily be handled near to where they lived /died.  The person applying for it would probably go to the office nearest to where they lived/worked
