Morning all
can anyone assist me in tracing my father who was in the Merchant Navy during the 2 WW
All I know is that he enlisted in Derby around 1939 and was a stoker, I do not know what ship or where he served,
Would there be a nominal roll and any service records of the Merchant Navy, From 1939 till 1945
Regards
George

WW2 service records are still with the MOD

There is a charge of £30.
Although it initially says you need a service number you do not. Date of birth is sufficient

Hello George,
We need to be clear whether you are meaning Merchant Navy or Royal Navy here. For Royal Navy you would need to contact the Ministry of Defence and obtain his service record. For Merchant Navy you would need to check the Fifth Register of Seamen and obtain any surviving CRS 10.
You mention Stoker - this would normally refer to Royal Navy with the Merchant Navy equivalent being a Fireman. If you wish to give a name date and place of birth I could check the MN side for you.

With regard to the MN only, the best way to find out for sure would be a search of BT 382 at the National Archives in Kew. This file will hold his CRS10, service record from Jan 1941, if it has survived.
The file is held in surname block order and the exact file you should check is BT 382/1658 - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10989883
Are you sure about his exact date of birth as I can find F.G. Smith b. 16.8.1911 in Nottingham? Do you have his mother's maiden name?

Not withstanding the advice given by Hugh, I would first of all obtain the "Seaman's Pouch" of the person born 16/08/1911.
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8247837
All things being equal, this should contain a photograph and personal information. This will tell you if it is the seaman you seek.
It is easily obtained from the National Archive via mail, where as the form CRS10 really needs a personal visit to search properly.
Sooner or later you would need to look at the CRS10 but whilst visiting Kew you would be able to search for Logbooks and Crew Agreements, which would give you a broader picture of you man's time at sea.
Providing of course we have the right person on both counts!
