Title: Alchorne family of Sussex
Post by: PeterGodfrey on Thursday 14 June 18 05:55 BST (UK)
I have the Alchornes in my family tree and have recently found sites where they are mentioned prior to 1500 including some Sir's and Lady's. If anyone has come across these could you advise where the information came from please? We all know that Parish Records started in 1538 so this is a mystery. The Weald site doesn't go back that far.
Thanks
Perplexed, Peter Godfrey, Shoalwater, Western Australia.

Welcome to rootschat, PeterGodfrey

If this is the sort of thing you have found:

https://www.geni.com/people/John-Alchorne/6000000017328649799

or this:

https://www.combedown.org/tng/getperson.php?personID=I515&tree=miller

(and probably lots of others on google searches)

have you tried to contact the tree owners to ask where they have got the information from?

Welcome to RootsChat Peter :)

If you look down the list of topics on the Beginners board, there's one called 'Alchorne family of Rotherfield' which might be of interest.  Unfortunately I can't give you a link from this phone.

This name has also come up on the Sussex board.

Thanks Carol I have seen all those posts but unfortunately there is no proof shown for the records.

Welcome to rootschat

Have you looked at TNA website that may have information on early Alchorne records

Peter,

Would you like to give us some names?  There are other early records available which might assist you, some of which are printed and available online e.g. IPM (Inquisitions Post Mortem), Sussex manor ownership in 17th century.

East Sussex Record Office has an extremely good catalogue.  It is often possible to glean a lot of information from the entries:
http://www.thekeep.info/

The wills can be viewed on FamilySearch, sign up for a free account.  You have to scroll through the images since there appears to be no specific order followed but if you find one that applies to someone on your tree, it might be very informative.

Thanks Little Nell. I have already accessed and had translated some wills from mid 1500's from the KEEP, thanks. As I live in Australia it is impossible to visit there.
The names I am finding in GENIE.com are John 1419-1499, Sir Thomas 1439-1491, Sir Richard 1455-1485 and Nicholas no dates. All looks good but with no details of where the information came from it is impossible to proved that they are correct. Thanks for the tip about familysearch, will follow that up.
Cheers
