Title: Snape birth record
Post by: RebeccaNZ on Thursday 14 June 18 09:57 BST (UK)
Hi,
This is a long shot, but thought I'd ask anyway.
I'm looking for a birth record for Ann Markum, born around 1793-96 in Snape, Suffolk. She married George Teager 25 May 1819 in Hatcheson and spent most of her life in Parham.

There is a christening for an Ann Markham in 1800 in Burgate but this is is a different Ann.

Any help appreciated  :)

An Ann Markum was bp.3/8/1793 Framlingham, Suffolk (11 miles from Snape), dau. of Samuel and Ann.

Closest I can find.

Thankyou! I think that's very likely to be her  :)

I think that you need to bear in mind that Snape parish registers for that period do not appear to be available online.

Familysearch has them for the period 1562-1719

We can see that there was some Markham activity in Snape (even without the baptisms!)
Mary Markham, buried 6 January 1797, age 38
James Markham, buried 6 June 1819, age 74

also Letitia buried 15 Oct 1804, age 13

If James + Mary were a married couple, possibility might be 3 June 1781, Bawdsey, James Markham + Mary Mealing.

Marriage in Snape, 11 October 1799, Hammond Howell + Mary Markham

Thankyou! That's really interesting that there were Markhams in Snape. I know the records aren't online ... I mostly use ancestry and there doesn't seem to be alot of Suffolk records. I probably need to do more research on the Lds records.

Hi,

I have found a Anne Markham  bapt. 14-6-1795  in Snape St.John the d/o James & Mary (late Mealing) born 11-12-1794.

Taken from the SuffolkFHS CD of baptisms for Loes & Orford Deaneries.

Is this the person you're after?

Edited; This seems to tie in with the marriage Johnw65 found below.

Thankyou Alan, that is very helpful! It does say Snape on her census records so looks like a good fit. Thankyou

Hi,

I have also found a James Markham bapt 6-2-1774 Bawdsey St.Mary s/o  John & Elizabeth.
Edited; Forget that bapt as I have found a burial for James Markham 24-1-1777 Inf. in  Bawdsey.

No sign of Mary Mealing's bapt. but there are some other baptisms to James & Mary where her name is recorded as "Maylin".

But we didn't know it said w/o James.
Brilliant stuff, Alan. The mystery of Ann seems to be solved!

Hi,

Looking at a map of parishes in Suffolk, Snape is some distance from Bawdsey so I just wonder if you have the right family.
Having said that, I can't find another couple that fit the times. Of course they could have moved for work purposes and there are some couples having children in Boyton with Capel St.Andrew. which would be mid-way between Snape & Bawdsey. I think there are at least a couple of "Markham" families as the dates of baptisms overlap those in Bawdsey & Boyton.

Not much help I'm afraid.

Yes, I did notice that Snape and bawdsey are quite a distance but its definitely the right baptism record for Anne as the dates and place match and I think those are her parents burials.

Theres a good chance that the Bawdsey marriage is that of her parents and they moved to Snape

Snape to Bawdsey would have been via river and sea.
