My Irish ancestors lived just north of Drogheda since at least 1630 according to a gravestone inscription, but there are references to two men of the same surname in the same area as far back as 1519. Although they were a Catholic family, it's not a Gaelic surname so I'm assuming that the family originally came from England or Wales.
I'm assuming that the area in England would have been Cheshire or Lancashire because that's the closest to Drogheda. However, I can find no information on the internet or in books about where English settlers to the Drogheda area originated. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Bowden (or Boden) surname.
Simplistic view: Settlers in Ulster came from Scotland. Settlers in Munster came from South-west England, but where did settlers in Leinster come from?

Hi Emms
Baptisms of the children of James Boden and Mary Hoey in Clogherhead, Co Louth:
- 26 Nov 1785 Richard Boden, sponsors: William McKowne and Ann Lennan
- 07 May 1789 Judith Boden, sponsors: Nichs Mcowen and Jane Quinn
- 30 Jul 1791 Elizabeth Boden, sponsors: James Donnelly and Mary Murray
- 06 Oct 1794 Bridget Boden, sponsors: John Linnen and Cathe Boden
Are any of these people your ancestors? My ancestor James Boden was born some time between 1785 and 1800. He lived and farmed in Newtownstalaban (aka Newtown Drogheda or just Newtown). There were many Boden (or Bowden) people in Drogheda and in the area north of Drogheda in the Barony of Ferrard. It's been very difficult sorting them out.
