Title: How do I get round file size too big when posting a photo
Post by: River Tyne Lass on Thursday 14 June 18 12:16 BST (UK)
I have been trying to post a picture of a quilt on my thread 'All Things Quilts'.  I keep getting file size too big.  Is there anyway of getting around this.   :-\

This quilt was a photo sent to me of a quilt my sister-in-law's sister has sent to me specifically for this thread.

I am not at all technical so hoping someone can help.

The very easiest way is to display the picture on your screen , and then assuming you are using Windows , use the Windows snipping tool to click and drag across the photograph and save it. You will find it is considerably smaller in size than the one you are trying to upload .   Do say if you need that describing in greater detail .

Thanks for responding so quickly Martin.

I have pasted the photo on a Word document.  Could you explain a bit further - I am hopeless at technology.   :-\

Actually, I have got this also on Window Photo Viewer

Martin I have just posted the image! ;D  I am at the library and have also had to seek help from a nearby man.  I showed him your advice.  Technology is certainly not my strong point.  Hopefully, one day I might join the ranks of the twenty first century with this - eventually.  Thank you  Martin! ;D

Right click on Photo

Open with Paint and resize it

Then go SAVE AS and name it   quilt_resized      or something.

You then have original and resized photos

River Tyne Lass, I'm glad to have helped you. I am a Watson.  My ancestors are from Bedlington, Jarrow and Hartlepool. Any possible overlap?

Hi hallmark,

Thank you in theory this sounds easy!  I am going to give this a go.  Hopefully, you might see the results soon as I will try to post photo on here following your advice. ;D

Hi Martin,

Thanks too for your help.  I am certainly learning new tricks today from both of you!

My Great Grandfather Simon Peter Conroy had a sister Mary who married a William Watson in Hexham at an Anglican Church even though she was RC.  Her son Thomas Conroy had a daughter called Elizabeth who married a George Watson.  Off the top of my head these are my Watsons.  This would be great if you were some connection to William and know what happened to him as I am not 100%.  Mary and William had a daughter amongst their ten children called Isabella who gets missed off all the Ancestry Trees.  What happened to this daughter too is a puzzle.  Mary is down as from Bedlington on one record but this can change.  What a life this Mary had!  If I got started on this I would be on all afternoon  ...

Will try hallmarks advice ..  here goes  .. fingers crossed

RTL, My GGF had a brother, William Holmes Watson, but he married Constance Jane Greig Mackenzie in 1896 in S Shields.  At one time I laughed about the Holmes/Watson connection, but then realised that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was only 9 years old when William was born, so it is just a bizarre coincidence.  I must try and find where the Holmes name came from.

William's mother was Isabella Watson, nee Frazer.  William GF was from Bedlington.

Just a matter of practicing

If a file is 900 kb for example..... reduce it to 50% and save it a a copy.

Computer says no ???

I have tried changing size on resize down to 90 from 100 and it is still not allowing.  Wonder what I am doing wrong?

Oh, I think we must have different Watsons, Martin.  Isabella daughter of William and Mary was born in 1885 and disappears after 1901 census.  Hopefully, will find her one day.

Success!  Hurrah! ;D  ;D ;D

Did it work because I reduced to 20% or because I gave the photo an angry sounding sort of name perhaps?  ;)

Sometimes you just have to get tough and show the computer whose the boss! ;D ;D ;)

Many thanks to you both for teaching this not so old (no not really) dog some new tricks today! :D

Rtl, so many people have helped me with family history matters, and the only way I can reciprocate is helping others with computer problems. Or rather, helping them with computer Solutions.

It was definitely the size reduction that worked. Computers are very fickle and don't like being treated badly.  Humorous file names might help.

Must have been very big file size to start with.... but just goes to show that reducing it to 20% the photo is still fine!!

I know the feeling with naming something!!!   ;D ;D  Good file name!

Yes the photo is still fine. :)

I now know what to do in future.  I have had this problem in the past which can be infuriating.  I am gleeful to know I should hopefully be able to post any future photos with ease now.  I am very grateful.   :D

Earlier photo attempts had calmer titles but as you can tell I was starting to get a bit frazzled ..  ;)  Don't know if I humoured the computer or scared it but whatever it worked, Martin. ;)  Perhaps I should give all my photos belligerent titles. ;) :)

Added - I have just sent email off to Sheila to let her know when she gets back tonight she will see her photo is on! :D

RTL, if you right click the original jpeg and select properties it will tell you how many MB or KB the image is. You then have an idea of the percentage by which it needs to be reduced :)

Thank you cristeen!  Another great tip to use in future. I will follow this advice too :)

Trouble is that it doesn't work Mathematically

If you reduce it by 50% horizontally and vertically it should be 1 quarter the original file size,,,,, but it's not!   ;D ;D

Just to add that, as your image is for a Totally Off Topic topic, its usual for images to be fairly small in size - say 600-700 pixels wide and less than 150 kb.

Pixels, MB and KB ... it is all French or Russian to me. ;)

I think in future I will just have to follow advice given as today and keep reducing percentage size until computer says yes instead of no. ;D ;)

Good evening,

In "pictures" right click on photo, new window opens, select edit near top.

New window, select "resize"

New window, select "pixels" it will show size in pixels on rh side. click on largest size, delete and type 600. Both sizes will change at same time.

Click "OK" at bottom, new window showing reduced picture, click "x" top right.

New window, click "save"

All complete, If you have tried to post and failed then you need to change file name before trying again for it to be accepted.

Thanks for all these tips and instructions - I will be using these in future.

I have tried shouting at the computer before but it didn't take me seriously.  Will have to develop a more angry tone with it in future, I think.  Or perhaps throw something at it.  Perhaps not when I am at the library though in case I end up getting thrown out.  Probably saying hallmark told me to do It won't wash with the staff, you see. :) ;)

Perhaps, John's method at the library or archives😇 and hallmarks method at home if computer says no. ;D ;)

The size (in KB or MB) of a photo opened in paint, is written at the bottom of the screen, after you have saved the copy check the bottom of the screen to check the size, if it's still too big (over 500KB) you can resize the copy and just save as often as needed.
