Title: Stokes Family
Post by: andy90184 on Thursday 14 June 18 15:53 BST (UK)
James STOKES was baptised on 14th October 1802 at Reading St Mary, later moving to Leicestershire where he married Elizabeth Hall on 11th April 1824.  I have for some time been trying to find earlier generations of the Stokes family but all I have been able to find are baptism records for James' siblings, also baptised at Reading St Mary - parents Joseph and Mary Stokes.  Joseph died aged 75 in Leicestershire in 1829 so would have been born around 1754.  I can find no trace of Joseph's baptism or his marriage to Mary.

If anyone can throw any light on this family I would be very pleased to hear from them!

You don't give a date range for the baptisms that you found.
So no indicator if he's first-born or last-born, or so when any marriage may have occurred.

Hampshire and Oxfordshire are both within easy distance of Reading. Done any searches there?

Thanks for the reply.

James's siblings were baptised as follows:
Thomas - 1791, Elizabeth - 1794, William - 1796, Thomas - 1798, Sarah -1799.  So James is the last born of those I have found.  Presumably Thomas in 1791 died at a young age.

I imagine Joseph and Mary would have married somewhere around 1785 - 1792 but have looked beyond those dates without finding anything convincing.  I haven't specifically looked at Hants or Oxon but I haven't come across any promising baptisms or marriages there when searching on Familysearch, Ancestry or Findmypast.

Many thanks for the suggestion - I'd not come across that baptism before but it sounds like a real possibility.  I will investigate!

Thanks again
