Hi, I'm looking for information about my g g uncle. His name was Charles Obst and he was from Saxony, Prussia originally. I know he lived in Liverpool and was a tailor. The earliest I can find anything about him is about 1859. I'm wondering how to find how he came to be in Liverpool and when he arrived (and why?) As far as I can tell he was the only Obst here until he had his children.
Any help would be great
Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat :)
Just to get a better sense of the dates - presumably he's the one born c1825 in Prussia, appearing in Liverpool censuses from at least 1871? (I haven't yet found the 1861 - do you have that?).
You mention a record dating from 1859 but you don't say what that was - is it the birth of son Robert (12 b Liverpool per 1871)?
1871 ref: RG10/3775/30/1 (Charles Obst is "married"; wife not with him and their children - but per 1881 she is Anne).

Birth registrations:
Wilhelmina Obst, mmn Gilmore, Dec qtr 1861 Liverpool
Hannah Maria Obst, mmn Gilmore, Jun qtr 1863 Liverpool
Anne Obst, mmn Gilmore, Jun qtr 1865 Liverpool
Louisa Obst, mmn Gilmore, Mar qtr 1867 Liverpool
-
It looks as though Robert was born to his mother's previous marriage:
Birth registration: Robert Ruxton, mmn Gilmore, Jun qtr 1859 Liverpool
Ann Gilmore had married Robert Ruxton 17 Apr 1853, St Nicholas Liverpool.
His death: Robert Ruxton aged 33, Jun qtr 1859 Liverpool.

Hi and thank you,
That is the correct Charles Obst and 1859 is the year of his son's birth ( although as you say it appears to be from his wife's previous marriage). Charles was living in a boarding house in seel street, Liverpool of which Ann ruxton was landlady. I know her first husband had died around the time Robert was born and she and Charles eventually got married. The questions arise as to whether Ann was mother to Charles kids or stepmother..and if it was the latter, who and where was the mother as the kids must have been born in liverpool
-
She was their mother - as the mother's maiden name of Gilmore shows on their birth registrations (reply #2).
There is also a Catholic baptism for daughter Anne b 1865 (as Anna Obst, in Latin) showing her parents as Charles (Caroli) Obst and Anne (Anna) formerly Gilmore. (St Peter Priory, Liverpool, 23 July 1865).
Robert Ruxton had also received a Catholic baptism in 1859.
I've now also found a Catholic baptism for Hannah Maria (as "Maria Joanna") in 1863 - parents Caroli "Osten" and Anne formerly "Gilmour".

I'm not seeing the marriage of Charles and Ann(e) - do you have details?
-
Robert’s birth shows as 7th March and Robert snr died June quarter -both 1859 so it seems likely that he is of that marriage.
-
I don't have the info for their marriage with me but if I remember correctly it was late 1860's / early 1870's. I have seen a copy of the marriage cert so can confirm its correct.

Yes, Robert Ruxton b 7 March 1859 was baptised 25 April 1859, son of Robert and Anna (nee Gilmore).
Robert Ruxton snr (a baker) died at the Northern Hospital, Liverpool on Tuesday 7 June 1859, having injured his hand on 20 May in machinery at his workplace: Mr Harrison's ship-bread bakery, Mersey St. An inquest reached the verdict of accidental death. (Liverpool Mercury, 9 June 1859).

Did it tell you the name and occupation of Charles' father?
-
I didn't know about Robert sent being a baker or what happened to him, just that he had died at a young age. It's this sort of detail about ancestors that brings them to life so thank you.
The cert for Charles and Anne's marriage didn't have info about Charles father I'm afraid..
I'm still wondering about Charles getting to Liverpool though. I've tried checking ships records with no luck and I believe he would have had to register with the local JP as an alien upon his arrival but again I'm not having any luck. Seems an unusual decision to move from Prussia all the way to Liverpool without a specific reason
-
Hello,
He may well have been a sugar baker. There were a good number of Prussians who came over to the UK in the 19th century to work as sugar bakers. I have a relative who came to London from Hanover about that time.
Sugarbakers, a rootschat member has set up a very informative site about it http://www.mawer.clara.net/intro.html

Hi Brie, thanks for the link it was very interesting. Charles was a tailor in Liverpool but I don't know who he worked for. Would maybe make sense if he had moved for work but again I think it's a long way to come without a specific job or reason to make the trip

Very strange this - there is no marriage listed for them in the marriage index under either of their names.

But I am still not seeing a marriage.

He may be related or a change of name :-\
-

That's great, gives me something to look into.
Many thanks to everyone for the information and help

Charles Obs t born 1825 in Prussia is a member of my family. Would you like more information?
-
I am researching the above who is a very close family member. Is anybody else connected?
-
I am also researching Charles Obst( Carl Freiderich Obst) who is a very close family member.
-
Some more info would help. Where and when was he born? Nothing in English births.
Where and when did he die?
Suspect we are looking at USA but as you have not posted on a specific board it’s difficult to determine
-
Hi sorry lived in Liverpool and married? Anne Gilmore. I have all the info from his arrival in Liverpool but was hoping to trace his past either in Prussia or even where he landed in England and any info on siblings parents. Thanks
-
What timescale are we looking at?
-
Is he the 1885 death in Liverpool aged 60?
-
No marriage in England. 1881/1891 shows Ann was born in Ireland. Children born in Liverpool from around 1859. Charles & children are boarders in 1871 but no Ann
Do you have any details of their marriage
-
Per FS he died 26.3.1885 and is buried in Anfield Cemetary. Unless his fathers name is on his marriage cert - it could be difficult to establish his parentage
-
A bit more information here - or similar info anyway :)
topics now merged
-
So somebody else is researching the same family.
Will ask moderator to merge posts and then Zeboboy2 can contact Flying Swan and exchange info
-
Zeboboy2 has already posted so hopefully FS will reply, Carole.
I think the search here is prior to Liverpool.
It does it look as though Charles and Ann married. 1861 and 1871 Ann uses her married/widowed name of Ruxton.

I have just merged the topics so the members can get in touch with one another.
