Title: Christian Malford records
Post by: MacGrigor on Thursday 14 June 18 20:39 BST (UK)
Hello,

Sarah Webb married James Provis in 1840 in Christian Malford. Her father was Richard and she was born in around 1815. Can anyone find a baptism for her? Also looking for a burial following her 1844 death in Bremhill.

Thanks,

Adam

Hello
Possible baptism at Bremhill
Sarah Webb  d of Sophia Webb baseborn Bremhill 5th July 1818
sister Jesse 28th march 1824

Sophia marries Joseph Barrington at Sutton Benger 3.6.1827
wit Thomas Webb  and William Hull
Sophia born 1793 Hufcut ?  Wilts

I know that doesn't explain the father Richard bit.

I had found a Richard Webb occ shoemaker and wife Sarah having children in Wilts around right sort of time but in Ashton Keynes some distance away. But looks like he can be eliminated. The first child of Sarah and James Provis was Ann Sophia, so looks like the baptism Ciderdrinker found is a strong possibility.

There's a Jesse Webb (male) with the Barringtons in 1851, right sort of age, but listed as lodger. I think the same Jesse is with a Rebecca Webb age 70 in Christian Malford in 1841.

Rebecca Webb widow 83 is in Sutton Benger in house of son Thomas Webb, also there is a nephew of Thomas (John Thompson) who is also with Rebecca in 1841.
So Thomas could be Sophia's brother and Rebecca her mother.

But there's also an Uffcott in Wilts near Broad Hinton where I've found a baptism for a Sophia Webb d/o Joseph and Rebecca on 30 Nov 1794. Perhaps enumerator mistranscribed sister Elizabeth's birthplace because Hulcott is similarly spelt and closer to where they were living in 1861

A Joseph Webb married Rebecca Hughes at Broad Hinton on 17 Aug 1789, she was otp, he was of Clyffe Pypard. They had a John and an Ann baptised in BH before Sophia.

Bapt for Thomas in Swindon 1797 (a bid earlier than age on census would imply), then some later children in Christian Malford and Bremhill, inc Noah and Sarah who died young and were buried in CM

Can't find baptism for Elizabeth Webb (unmarried sister / housekeeper) but there is a baptism for a Robert Webb s/o Elizabeth Webb in CM in 1824 and a burial for Robert shortly after. Could be her

There is an Honor Webb bapt in CM and I think she could be the one who married in CM on 23 Jun 1822, transcribed as Noama. Groom was William Thompson (parents of Thompson children living with Rebecca Webb in 1841?). Witnesses were Sophia Webb and Rebecca Hatherell.

John Webb b Broad Hinton abt 1791 is in Bremhill in 1851 with wife Ruth, probably the John Webb who married Ruth Hillyer. In 1841 they have several children including Joseph, Noah and Honour. Named after father and two siblings who died as children??

Thanks for all of that! There's every chance that 'Richard Webb' never existed, and that Sarah was in fact illegitimate.
