Hi, just wondering if anyone can help please with tracing Thomas Alcock's parents? (I have his children.) He was born about 1849 in Hanley, Staffordshire, and died 1 Aug 1932. I'm also interested in his wife's parents - Ann Mulligan born about 1849 in Preston, Lancashire, died in 1895. I think Thomas and Ann married in Preston in 1874.
-
The marriage should name their fathers
Dec qtr 1874
ALCOCK Thomas Henry
Mulligan Ann
Preston 8e 861
LancashireBMD has the marriage as 'Preston Register Office or Registrar Attended'

This looks like Ann
1871 4204/92/9
3 Bowker Street Preston
George Mulligan 56 yrs tailor b Ireland
Ann Mulligan 56 yrs b Ireland
Elizabeth Mulligan 24 yrs
May Mulligan 27 yrs
Ann Mulligan 21 yrs
Joseph Mulligan nephew 16 yrs Tailor

Thanks Rosie. Thanks Heywood - yes I agree, it looks like her. Thomas Alcock was a tailor as well, like Ann's father.

That’s why I posted the occupations. I wonder if Thomas and Ann met through that or if Thomas acquired the trade through his in-laws. As yet I can’t find a matching Thomas in 1871.
-
It looks like George's marriage to Ann was a second marriage for Ann
Daughters are registered with mmn - Carey (various spelling)
the marriage on lancashire BMD gives 2 surnames for Ann - Carey & Darby
In 1861 there is a Thomas Darby living with them stepson to George
-
possibly for George as well as there is a George with a mary in 1841 of the right age born Ireland who is a tailot
-
That is so interesting Lancsann! I wonder if the marriage gives the father for Ann born 1815.

I've decided to order the 1874 marriage cert for Thomas Alcock and Ann, because it's the only way I can be sure I have the correct people. Would you recommend doing this through Lancashire BMD or GRO? Which would be quicker?
-
The GRO is normally cheaper £9.25. I think Lancashire charges £10.
I doubt there would be much difference in time for delivery

died 1 Aug 1932.

Some grave details are given, but the graves register is not digitized as yet.

What a great find jonw65 -- I had no idea those records were on Family Search.

Lancashire has original certificates. The facsimile copies I have from Lancashire show original signatures.

Some of mine might be among them. One of my reasons for following and contributing to certain threads is in the hope of gleaning information and sources which may be useful later. Mutual benefit. :)

This can't be guaranteed, I have some from Lancashire that do not show original signatures ;)

Well just to keep everyone up to date, it was an 1874 Roman Catholic marriage, and I had been heading down the wrong track entirely with Thomas Henry Alcock's father. He was not the gilder Thomas Alcock, he was John Alcock, tailor, who had died before the marriage date. Just goes to show one mustn't presume.

That was well worth getting then :) At least you are back on track
