Title: Charles NOTLEY
Post by: mickawinn on Friday 15 June 18 15:38 BST (UK)
Born 27 Mar 1887. On the 1939 register on the continuation page is the following:- PWC-399-5161 (the next word I can't read but seems to end 'ssion') 314965 s/m2 RAF.
Does anyone know what this means? I believe he was a Sgt Maj in the Fleet Air Arm in the 20s but my military knowledge of him ends there.

Sorry meant to add that 314965 was his service number.

Hi,

If you have access to FindMyPast his Service record can be found there. It would appear that he was originally in the Navy but transferred to the RAF 1 April 1918, rank F/Sgt (Flight Sergeant).

The two lines look as though they were written by different people.  :-\

There is another thread on rootschat about P.W.C. as to whether it was the abbreviation for Post War Credits or something else.

As Rosie says, this has been discussed before.  It is not related directly to his military record which was in the Royal Navy (including the Royal Naval Air Service) 1904-1918 when it and he became RAF.  His RN final rank was Chief Petty Officer (can be seen as equivalent to sergeant major), translated as Flight Sergeant when he became RAF on 1 April 1918 becoming Sergeant Major Second Class in 1928 (a rank structure that is now different).  Discharged after a fine career in Oct 1928.

Check out previous threads with PWC or Post War credits in the discussion.  Lots
on Google also about Post War Credits.
