Title: Balmourney Mill? Possibly in Angus or Dundee area.
Post by: Liviani on Friday 15 June 18 18:26 BST (UK)
Been researching a new branch and having some difficulty tracking down a birthplace that's noted on the 1881 census.

The head of the house is my 4x great-aunt a Euphemia Dair (sometimes Dear), born abt 1844 in Carmyllie, Angus.

In 1881 they are living at 63 Perth Road, Dundee and she is living with 5 of her biological children and an adopted daughter: Isabella Taylor who is 5 years old. Her place of birth isn't clear it just states: Balmourney Mill. This is on the free index of the 1881 census on SP and on external sites too.

I've tried googling various spellings of this Mill and can't bring anything up that's similar.

Can anyone help me track this down. I've also searched births on IGI for Isabella Taylor (various spellings) and can't find anything that sticks out at me.

Many thanks.

Liv.

Could it be a misreading of Balmossie Mills?

Don't know if this this will be of any help at all but on the SP Index there is a birth record for an Isabella Taylor born 1875 at Auchterhouse.

Looking at the area around Auchterhouse there is a place with the name of Balbeuchley.

As you know things are often mistranscribed.

Thanks both for you help. I believe it may actually be Balmerino, Fife. I had been searching for Taylor the whole time, to my error.

In 1891, there is a 15 year old Isabella Dair born Balmerino living in Thorter Row, Dundee. There is a corresponding birth in 1876 in Balmerino for Isabel Taylor in Balmerino so she will have taken on the Dair (Dear) surname at some point.
