Title: JOHN MURPHY & MARY MURPHY (NEE BOYTON)
Post by: Alfordmurphy on Friday 15 June 18 22:08 BST (UK)
Would love to have his photo dated, it's of my great great grand parents and I think it was either taken in Ireland or New Zealand.

There's a possibility of it being 1880's however I think more likely 1870's.
The over painted convector rad is more recent.

Welcome to Rootschat, Alfordmurphy.

Unfortunately it's not possible to tell from the image where the photo was taken; within a few months people wore the same fashions worldwide. If you had access to the original photo and could post it in full - front and back - both the card design and details printed on it might provide clues.

As Peter said we need to see the original, however this was taken in a photo booth & you're more likely to see one of these in NZ although they were in use in the UK also.

Thank you Peter and Jim,  The back of the photo has a faint stamp, PJ Feeney Photo Artist, Nelson and looks like it could be NZ.  My mother has very little information except that her grandfather Edward was raised by his grandmother in Dublin Ireland where he was born (she presumed his parents John and Mary hid  had died young).  I can not find any records other then John and Marys wedding in 1868 and the birth of their two sons in 1869 and 1871 (the latter died in 1872) in Dublin.  Thanks for your help.

Here's an interesting link. It appears that your photographer's career did not end well:

Thanks for that Peter, looks like they must have gone to New Zealand and left their young son behind in Dublin with her grandmother.  He was a printer, I will have a look and see if I can find anything on them in New Zealand.  But John and Mary Murphy must be the hardest names to find :(
