Title: John MEIN
Post by: cupcake on Saturday 16 June 18 07:19 BST (UK)
I would like any information on my G G Grandparents John MEIN and his wife Jane ( don't know her maiden name).  Where did they come from and when and where they died.

From the 1841 Census they lived at Jericho,Locharbriggs. John & Jane were both 60 then.

Their son William MEIN was married to a Janet Gracie - William worked at the sandstone Quarry.

Any information will be very much appreciated.

Have looked up the 1851 census  for Jane Mein/Mean - Jericho - Head of household  widow - 75, Pauper. So, it would appear her husband John died between 1841/1851.

Have looked up deaths for both of them on Scotlands People, but nothing.

The Jane MEIN was 60 in 1841 so she was born abt.1781. The one you have found would have been born abt.1776.

Thank you for looking.

I wouldn’t take for gospel what age they put on census...I have found that ages can be up or down as much as 10 years.....might be worth the £1.50 even if it’s not her...at least then you can discount her

As Ev mentioned I had put this question on RC in 2013 and, what you found on Scotlands People is my  GGG Grandmother.
She died July 12 1865 aged 89 yrs, in the Parish of Holywood. She was living with her married daughter. (Information from 1861 census from RC JMStrachan).

I will have to be more careful and check before I post things in the future.

It’s easy enough done Cupcake.....good luck with your search
On Ancestry there is a John Mein who married a Jean Black in Dumfries in 1800... notice from 1851 census that her neighbours have the surname of Black....worth a look?

Thank you for that :). I will certainly look at Ancestry when I next go to the library  as I can access it there.

I visited the Library yesterday and agree John Mein  married a Jean Black in Dumfries in 1800.

I also think I have found John MEINS parents - John MEIN (1756- 1816) New Abbey and Marion MILROY - (1766-1833) Troqueer

Also perhaps two sons with parents John Mein & Jane Mein (Black) John MEIN (shoemaker) married, died 8 Aug 1860 aged 44 yrs Glenharvie, New Abbey. Will have to find his wife though.

Robert MEIN (Blacksmith) journeyman married to Isabella Hay? Died June 16 1873 aged 65 yrs. Low ??  Pollockshaws

Will go back again later, to search more.
