Hi,
I am confused and would appreciate some help.
Different family trees have Francis Foord (baptised 1795 at Westham and sometimes shown as Ford) marrying either -
On 5 December 1815 at Halden, Kent to a Mary Mantel (Mantle) or
On 15 September 1818 to Mary Anne Wadey at Brighthelmston, Sussex or
During 1818 to Mary Anne Wadey at St Nicholas, Brighton Sussex
The family are shown in the 1841/51/61 censuses with Francis dying in 1869 - Mary had already died in 1842.
Mary is shown as age 42 in 1841 suggesting she was born c1799 and familysearch.org has a Mary Anne Wadey christened in Goring, Sussex on 19 Dec 1799. There is a Mary Mantel christened on 17 May 1795 in Boughton-Malherbe, Kent but this one seems to be too early. The only thing I have to go on is the 1841 census which shows Mary living in Westham and being born in the county.
Between them Francis and Mary had 6 children - Henry 1818; Charles 1823; Susannah 1829; Sally 1831; Emma 1833 and Thomas 1842.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

If they had a Thomas b 1842 then doesn’t his mmn on birth registration give you the answer?

Hi,
Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees!!
Why didn't I think of that - thank you.

There is a Thomas Foord birth reg Mar qtr 1842 Eastbourne with mother’s maiden name Cutbush.

You might also consider the possibility that Francis married more than one Mary. There is a big gap between the births of Emma and Thomas.
The Francis who married Mary Wadey in 1818 was “of the 35th Regiment of Foot” - is that true of your man?

Hi,
I have just found Thomas's mother maiden name as Cutbush. So its not Wadey nor Mantel!!
Francis was an "Ag Lab" on one census and a "Butcher" on another so the 35th Regiment of Foot man isn't involved. He is in the city and county directory for 1851 as a Butcher.
My current guess is that Mary died in childbirth when Thomas was born.

Hi,
As I don't have access to any Sussex records, I wondered if you were able to find the names of Mary Cutbush's parents and her birth details?
I am assuming she was born c1797/9 most probably in the Sussex area?

Let's hope someone can help with that!

Hi, have just searched the Sussex FHG site 1790-1810 for this baptism without any results I am afraid.
It seems not to be a Sussex name, there being only 7 baptisms (none of them Mary) and 1 burial all at Northiam, St. Mary.

Hi,
Many thanks for looking. Looks like this one will remain unsolved.

Other marriages at Beckley
information removed
Going back, there are some earlier marriages at Northiam, including (the males)
information removed
A William Cutbush was buried at Beckley in 1822 age 42, and a Mary Cutbush buried there in 1866 age 84.
Could they be the William + Mary married 1799?
Mary can be found in Beckley in the census, and others who were born there appear as well.
Here is Mary and her son William in 1861

Mad idea - is it possible that Mary was born just before that marriage in 1799? Or were William and Mary just not having their children baptized in Beckley or Northiam? That's if they aren't the parents of the children in Northiam found by Pheno? A Thomas Cutbush was buried in Northiam in 1812, age 32

Just checked and there isn't a Mary Skinner baptism in Northiam around the right time.

Thanks, Pheno.
Alas, Mary remains a mystery!
