Title: Sarah Pridlett? Major John Watson (1720-1799)
Post by: Susan Elliot on Sunday 17 June 18 04:10 BST (UK)
John Watson was born in Dornton in 1720 and married a Sarah Pridlett (1749-1840). I was given the name Pridlett and it appears as Sarah's surname on various online trees. My problem is that this seems to be either a very unusual surname or incorrect. I can only find one reference on FindMyPast
I'm beginning to wonder whether this surname was a typographical error somewhere along the line. Sir James Watson was their son and they had other children including my ancestor Mary Anne Watson who was born in Chilton and died in Calcutta.  They were a strong military family and associated with the British in India. Would appreciate any help. Thanks. Susan.

Just adding that the marriage 'apparently' took place at Broughton, Buckinghamshire on 26/9/1762 for anyone able to check it

When I checked the IGI batch numbers for Broughton, Bucks, I got just two marriages in 1762:

26 Sept 1762. William Watson and Elizabeth Nichols

24 Nov 1762. Richard Richet and Martha Revis

There were a few more marriages in 1761 and 1763, one of them with Elizabeth Ricket. I wonder if Rickett might have been transcribed as Pridlett?

The marriage information was from an online tree so very suspect.  Thanks for checking it Vance

Yes, thank you very much for checking it :)   Rickett does sound suspiciously like Prickett and I'm beginning to suspect that something along these lines has occurred. As Sarah Watson she is named on all the birth certificates and DNs as well as her husband's will, so I'm certain of her first name.

It would be nice to find the marriage entry to see what it does say.  :)

The baptism for Harriot Ann Watson in the Bishops transcripts for Chilton 23 Mar 1788 name the mother as Sarah Prickett

There is a Sarah Prickett baptised in Brill 18 Jun 1747 - parents John & Ann.  Sarahs age at death gives birth around this time.

There's a will of a John Prickett, of Wendover, victualler, in 1778.

On the off chance that they did not marry before having their children (they would not be the first) there is a marriage by licence in 1791 Westminster between a John Watson and a Sarah Prickett  ::)
