Hi,
I have drawn a blank with my relative John Johnson. He was born in Coppull in 1865 the son of Robert and Mary. In 1889 he marries an Ellen Standing and they have two children - Polly born in 1890 and Ralph born in 1894 who dies the following year. The family are on the 1891 census and then on oth the 1901 and 1911 censuses John is lodging with other people but still married. I can’t find Ellen and Polly on any census after 1891.
Ellen appears to be the daughter of Daniel Standing and Mary Gregson, but her birth record says her mother’s maiden name is Standing and Daniel appears to do a bunk and start a new life in Morley, Yorkshire as a single man. No idea what he opens to Mary.
Any help on this would be really appreciated, because it has stumped me! Thanks

Do you have Ellen's birth certificate and marriage certificate? If you have please could you post the full details from them.

Hi - I have ordered the certificates.

Let us know when they arrive :)

Have you looked for Ellen as Nellie/Nelly or Helen on census?
-
Yes I have looked at every variation and the same with Polly which I thought would be easier. There is a Polly Hoddy on the 1911 census which doesn’t fit anyone else but not sure!
-
I was just looking at her in 1911 but can't see her anywhere else ::)
-
Ok well I think that John is on the 1901 census with his daughter. It she is now called Mary E Johnson. Maybe Ellen was in hospital or something. So I am guessing Polly has become Mary Ellen. No wonder I couldn’t find her!

This might be interesting?

Note John is not 7, it says "service"
Ellen lists herself as widow
(Polly is a diminutive name for Mary)

Yes I had just found that! She certainly isn’t a widow because John is boarding with another family and he states he has been married for 21 years and had two children and one had died. And I saw the “son” John said service and not 7. I don’t think this couple liked each other very much!

Looks like young 'John' ::)

No Ralph dies the following year. I think young John is some cover for old John. I have now found Ellen Standing on the 1901 census. She is with her mother who had remarried so is now Mary Bentham. This is even though her real husband escaped to Yorkshire. Ellen states she is a widow in 1901.
