Title: Los Angeles birth and death records
Post by: Sally4x on Sunday 17 June 18 15:12 BST (UK)
I was wondering if anyone knew how to access these. My auntie died in Texas and never had any children and I have just seen on the 1940 census that she was living in Los Angeles and had a son born there. She never mentioned any children, in fact she always said she couldn’t have any. I am presuming he died as a baby. I would love to find out more.

Thanks

Would you care to give us her name and location on the 1940 census?

Maureen

If the birth and death occurred in Los Angeles they can probably be found.  What's her name?

Yes it’s Rufus Maurice on the 1940 census. His dad was Rufus Maurice and his mum Arzel Maurice.

Thanks

What was the mother's maiden surname?

It looks like Rufus Maurice and Arzel Peables married in Taylor, Texas on 1 Nov. 1937.  It looks like a 1939 & 1941 city directory has them in Abilene, TX.  (That fits with the 1940 census info about where they were in 1935.)  The 1942 city directory has them listed together and with a Mrs. Arzel Maurice at the same address, so maybe there was a marriage issue?

Thanks, shellyesq.  I just found that.   But I don't find the birth of Rufus Jr.

Yes that is the correct family. On the 1940 census in California they were living next my mum Stella McAnally. Then they all went back to Texas. It’s just odd because I was always told that she desperately wanted children, but couldn’t have any. Her maiden name was Peables.

Looks like they may have divorced and remarried, as there is a 1948 marriage record here listing Arzel as Mrs. Arzel Maurice - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9P3R-9J44?i=563&cc=1803985

It looks like Rufus was getting a divorce from someone else in 1948 prior to his remarriage to Arzel.  https://www.newspapers.com/clip/21038041/

A possible mention of Arzel's divorce from husband #2 John E. Lennon - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/21039426/

I think this is John's burial, as mother Julia is in the same cemetery - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/172001030/john-e.-lennon

I have a weird theory about this one, but it involves a living or possibly living person, so I will send it via personal message.  If anyone else wants to hear it, let me know.

I'd be interested in the theory but I'm not  a family member.
