Thank you very much Colin for all the information. I needed to know his parents were Father John Mother Jane nee Black. Could the Margaret HAY 64 be Isabella's sister. When did Isabella die?

Can you make out John's wife on the headstone? Mary ???

Looks like brother in law James Stewart think this Mary is his sister not his wife ? A death for Mary Mein other name Stewart on Scotland's People 1874 New Abbey age 73 makes her born about 1801 ..

This could be a possible record on Freecen 1851 Census John Main age 35 b Jericho Dumfrieshire
Shoemaker unmarried lodging with a John and Agnes Campbell West Kilpatrick ..
Found his marriage 1857 Torthorwald
John Mein age 40 bachelor ( foreman shoemaker ) parents John Main Jane Black
Isabella Forsyth age 41 spinster
Possible death for Isabella Main other name Forsyth 1867 Lochmaben age 52
Will e-mail mail you copy of marriage

I believe a family of Mein's ran the post-office in Edinburgh for many years!
Skoosh.

This looks promising :) - my GGG Grandparents John MEIN Jane MEIN (ms Black) & lived at Jericho and were there on the 1841 census. Looks as if this John MEIN/MAIN is their son - and makes me wonder about the John MEIN at New Abbey ???.
Torthorwald isn't far from Jericho.
Look forward to the copy of the marriage. Thank you.

Would appear the John MEIN headstone at New Abbey is my John MEIN. His death certificate confirms this. John died three years after he married Isabella Forsyth in 1857.Cause of death was 'phthisis pulmonalis', basically tuberculosis, for several months.
What I find odd is, it just states he was married - no wife's name - His wife died 1867, Lochmaben, with her brother as informant.
Wonder if they had any children?

Yes all the information from the death certificate registered by his nephew William Stewart ties in with the brother in laws name James Stewart ...James Stewart was married to his sister Mary Mein and they were at Glenharvy on census records ...Still trying to decipher names from the stone gets a bit confusing as there is sons of James Stewart listed on the stone also

That makes sense, I now know John had a sister, Mary MEIN and married to a James Stewart. What would I do without you help.
Still can't work out why John's wife, Isabella isn't mentioned on his death cert. instead of married.

Marriage for Mary Mein 16 May 1830 Dumfries to James Stewart
1851 census Glen Harvey New Abbey transcribed as Stwart on Ancestry
James Stewart age 46
Mary Stewart age 44 born Troqueer
Alex 18,John 16, Margaret 13 ,James 10 Jane 7
Still there on the 1861 census
The wording on the grave stone is a bit jumbled knowing who is the son or daughter of who ???
But I would say the Alexander that died 1870 is the son of Mary and James and Margaret that died in Liverpool 1902 also their daughter ..Probate record for her she never married

Well done Rosie, you have given me so much information and will keep me busy for a while. I have looked on FreeCEN - perhaps I should be looking on Ancestry at the library.

The family were also at the same address in 1841
This could be a possible census record for John Mein's wife
1861 address Bankhead Caerlaverock Dumfries
Isabella Forsyth age 73
Isabella Forsyth age 45
So I don't think they had any family

Could be. There are quite a few Forsyths in Torthorwald not far from Lochmaben, where Isabella died in 1867. Will check it out tomorrow. I somehow don't think they had children.

I have been looking at this 1861 census again Rosie and, I think you are correct. Her father James was deceased by 1867, when Isabella died in Lochmaben and, her brother Thomas was the informant.
Would like to find Isabella's burial place, if just see if her husband John MEIN is mentioned.

Maybe buried in with her parents if we can find where they are buried ?

Rosie
Yes, finding the parents burial place could be difficult.
Will have to see if there is a cemetery near Bankhead, Caerlaverock, Dumfries and look for MI’s.
Isabella died at Lochmaben 1867 and, her brother Thomas was the informant – so was she staying with him when she died.
Without MI’s I’ll never know.
