Have just come across a DNA match with a Scottish ancestor with this surname.
-
Hi Hurworth,
I don't think this is a scottish name or if it is it's a bit skew-whiff?
A quick search on SP for all years incorporated in their indexes turns up...
227 in 4 categories which includes BMDs, Census' & Valuation Rolls (some of those who may/likely have been listed in the different categories) i.e. doesn't point to a scottish name with that particular spelling.
Can you be more specific as to where/when in terms of yrs/areas & any other info. which may help to sort out what the name may have been as names differ a lot with pronunciation with accents/areas/counties/countries etc?
One which may be worth considering is Ainsley/Ainslie although not in abundance either?

I would take a guess and say On..gel..lee with a soft G. Sounds French to me ???
-
Hurworth,
Ladybirds thoughts are worth considering!
Do you have French connections in your DNA?
Scottish census records may reveal such but really you will need dates/places etc. I think?

The Scottish ancestor may not be Scottish - and may just live in Scotland?
Your match with the Scottish ancestor might be through his/her mother?
There are no matches for that surname with that spelling on the "surname profiler".
-
The match's tree has an ancestor in Aberdeenshire with this surname in the mid 18th century, but I don't know how they came by this information.
-
Do you have a forename or at least male/female?

This is one of the earliest I found but nowhere near Aberdeen although I will check others;
A marriage i.e. Donald is under both Catanach & Angely & marrying an Angely!
CATANACH or ANGELY DONALD ANGELY ISABELLA
27/11/1780
Edinburgh, St Mary's Cathedral, Midlothian

Thanks rosinish.
I can see on ScotlandsPeople that there are records for what could be similar surnames, but it depends on how the surname is pronounced.
-
Closest I'm finding for the Aberdeen area is the surname Angus.
Angely seem to be Borders of Scotland areas.

Hurworth,
If you search Sp with ang**** using the 'wild cards allowed' option there's a few variations to consider although you will need to add in the dates you're searching or leave it wide open for all?

Only two Angely names on Free BMD (England and Wales). Alexander died Longtown, Cumberland area, March Qtr. 1843.
Robert married Plymouth, Devon area, Sept. Qtr. 1845.
-
No mention of Angely or similar in G F Black The Surnames of Scotland
-
Hi being a Scottish Angely it is pronounced (ANGEL - AY)
Although the proper French is (An-gel-ee)
If you have a Scottish DNA trace it will be us.
