My brother in law was told that his grand father was Charlie Chaplin s cousin ...
I thought I'd be able to solve it for him but Ancestry subscription have run out and eyes are strained
I think the cousins were actually Charles chaplin senior and alfred john Chaplin but don't have their birth years to find mutual grandfather
The dates I do know are Eric Alfred Chaplin 1923 -1996 wife Margaret Lillian Smith
His father was Alfred Thomas Chaplin
Who I belive is the one born 1888 in Fulham
Wife Caroline A Bradford
In which case his father Alfred John CHAPLIN would be born Newton Suffolk aged 33 in 1901 wife Eliza C

I haven’t checked through it, but Find My Past has a ‘Famous family trees’ blog about Charlie Chaplin.
They have Charlie Chaplin’s grandfather as Spencer Chaplin born c.1826 in Ipswich.

I've been looking at shadrach 2 as the article calls him
I had found that he went back to his father's trade and was a bootmaker aged 67 in 1881 & a clog maker in 1891
But have some conflicting information about his wife as I think Sophie died in Ipswich in 1868
his wife in 1881 and 1891 is Susan
So I wonder if his children got inheritance from 2nd wife
I'm presuming Shadrach 2 siblings Mesach Abednego are boys names

Here is Spencer as a widower in 1881 with 2 boys and 2 girls born after Charles

I stopped reading when it said they were descended from Huguenots. ::)
There are a considerable number of Chaplins in West Suffolk from the 1500s onwards, particularly two "families" associated with Monks Eleigh / Chelsworth and Acton / Semer. There are also a number of published pedigrees on the various families with the usual number of errors unfortunately. We've been researching the Acton/Semer family for some years.
From what I've seen its believed that Charlie Chaplin's line links into the Chelsworth/Monks Eleigh family but I've not been through the "tree" with a fine tooth comb as not my particular line and there's no obvious connection between the two lines in the 1500s in spite of their proximity. If there is a connection its further back. Some members of each of these lines coincidentally resided in the same parishes at the same times which I think has caused some confusion with some researchers.

Also looking at some original censuses found James Chaplin the elder living a few doors away from.son James the hawker
1851 james & Phoebe had granddaughter Maria may be first child of James with first wife Charlotte
The hawker had far more children with Rosa than I initially thought
By 1861 James the elderly and widow
In 1871 he is head on his own but 2 doors away aged 79 again lab "unable to work"
As for Zechariah there is one in each generation so Rosa did have a son zacharia and a brother in law

Caroline Ann Bradford was a very accomplished lady and even if her husband isn't linked to Charlie Chaplin it's good to know that she was a pianist employed to play the music for silent films
Her grandson sent a pic for me to add to her ancestry profile .And is intrigged to know what the scandal about his grandfather Alfred Thomas was .He thought it was maybe to do with drunk driving which would explain why he went from driving cabs in the 1920.s to making vehicles in 1939

That Alfred Thomas isn't the father of your Eric. The vehicle builder in Fulham would appear to be with his wife who is some years older and he was born in 1882 in Barnet RD with MMN Fox. They are together on the Electoral Rolls at the same address as early as 1927.
In any case, Eliza Caroline Chaplin nee Bradford is on the 1939 Register with her husband Alfred and son James at 20 St Olafs Road, Fulham, the same address they are at on the 1911 Census.
Alfred Thomas Chaplin son of Alfred and Eliza Caroline can be found at 74 Wardo Avenue, Fulham, on the 1939 Register. His occupation looks like Lead Light Cemente... (the end of the last word is obscured by the middle of the book). This is the same address that Alfred Thomas and Caroline Ann Chaplin are at from 1919 Electoral Register onwards up until 1935 (those viewable on Ancestry anyway). Alfred Thomas' date of birth is listed on the 1939 Register as 27 April 1888 (the Alfred Thomas Vehicle Builder has birth date of 18 Feb 1882). The birth registered in 1888 with MMN of Bradford would tie in with the 1888 Alfred Thomas on the 1939 Register and the same date is on Alfred's baptism on 29 July 1895 at Walham Green when he was baptised with his siblings James, William and Rosa, their father being listed as a Cab Driver.
Its interesting you say that Alfred's family say his wife threw him out because he remained at 74 Wardo Avenue and it was Caroline and the children who appear to have moved elsewhere as Caroline only shows there on the Electoral Registers up until 1935.

How can he be with his mother in 1939 when she is at the same address as in 1911 with her husband and son, and son Alfred Thomas is with them in 1911?
I suggest you have a look at the London Electoral Registers and you'll see it is a completely different family.
I'm sorry if you don't like me refuting your research but it is obvious that a mistake had been made and I've provided the evidence. Obviously it is up to you whether you want to take any notice of it or not but this thread is somewhat disjointed to follow anyway trying to find a link to Charlie Chaplin which may not exist and most likely does not exist very closely.

Not sure where you've got the death for Phoebe in 1817 on your Ancestry tree from with a second wife, not born out by the census entries or burial index. No Chaplin burials on the Suffolk Burial Index at Great Waldingfield. While its not complete, the missing records tend to be from an earlier period.
James and Phoebe are in Newton on the Census together.

However, it looks like Mary as the mother's name is a mistake and it should be Sarah because there are four other children baptised to them in the parish and all list the mother as Sarah nee Howard or Haward - John (1787), Thomas (1789), Mary Ann (1791) and Maria (1795).

There is a John Chaplin buried at Newton 3 Jan 1800 but no age and two Ann's buried 2 Nov 1802 and 27 Nov 1804 but again with no ages. All from the Suffolk Burial Index.
There is admittedly a James Chaplin baptised 18 Jan 1761 at Great Waldingfield to James and Mary Chaplin. However, James' age on his burial suggests he is more likely to be the younger James baptised 1764, especially as his eldest son was named John. Not concrete proof but perhaps more likely than the 1761 baptism.

I am sorry but I really do not understand what you are saying. I never said that the James (with wife Phoebe) in Great Waldingfield and Newton was the son of a James born in 1786 when he was baptised in 1793. I cannot for the life of me, re-reading what I wrote, understand where you get this from. I also cannot work out why you think that this James was born in 1786, unless that is the approximate age from the 1841 Census (which is known to be the least reliable of all census), because on other Census and also his burial his year is birth is down as c1793.

A woman at our History Society has a full tree taking her back to her ancestor, a sibling of Charles Chaplin from the Stowmarket area of the county (from recollection) so possibly Old Newton rather than Newton.

Ref the link between Eliza Caroline Bradford and Caroline Ann Bradford
Caroline Ann Bradford’s father Thomas John Bradford was a brother of Eliza Caroline Bradford, wife of Alfred Chaplin. Eliza Caroline was born in Kensington in 1866 and Thomas John was born in Chelsea in 1871. Both children of Thomas Bradford, Cab Driver and Eliza Nee Huxley.
This means that Eric Alfred Chaplin’s paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather were brother and sister.
