I am hoping to find some information on a Mary Eveline Logan born New Zealand 1889, her Father is Edward Anthony Logan.
She died in 1927 In West Melbourne ,Victoria Australia.
Would be most grateful if anyone can shed some light on this woman who may or may not be part of my family.
Is my Great Grandfather Edward Anthony Logan born 1838 and dying in 1904 in England, her father or is it another man by the same name.
He was a chief engineer working for P&O on the mail runs from the UK.

Hi there,
Victoria, Australia's BDM online index gives Mary's surname at death as STEWART, with father as Edward LOGAN, and the informant did not know her Mum's given name. (#15620) May I ask if you have her marriage certificate, and if so, what information is recorded on that registration about herself (age, place of birth) and her parents (full names, occupation, etc) as I feel that info, given first hand, will help advance your research.
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj
I will ask the volunteer Global Moderator team to move this thread to the Australia Board (from Beginners Board) as I think there's plenty of regulars there who have excellent understanding of family history research in Victoria.

newspaper cutting has some family history info, including Mary Eveline STEWART's mum's given name. I suspect there's a mis-heard surname involved here (HOGAN v LOGAN)

returns James HOGAN (husband of Mary)…..several occasions
Death, 1927, for Mary Eveline STEWART has age 38.
Might be mother of George STEWART?

Thank you, surname is LOGAN and father is Edward Anthony.
None of the names in the items posted match any names I have verified.

Can you please type up the info from her 1909 marriage document as it has first hand info she provided.
Also which document gives you her NZ birth?

As already mentioned, the death entry.
The Victorian Death Index in its CD form which I have viewed, shows the following.
STEWART, Mary Eveline.
Father Edwd LOGAN
Mother Unk Unk
Melb W
Age 38
1927/15620
There is not a second name given for the father.
This Mary Eveline STEWART is interred at Fawkner Memorial Park. It was a catholic interment and she is located with Mary and James HOGAN who are of an age to be her parents.
I would be starting to think about informant errors in this case.

AIF on enlistment, Frank HOGAN as born Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria, and aged 21 years 3 months as at 26 Feb 1916 when signing papers at Bendigo. So looking for a birth in 1894. So, Mary Eveline would be his older sister, :) so perhaps a question could be ... when were her parents in NZ ....

A Bendigo newspaper notes Frank's recruitment.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/220908679
28th Feb 1916
Reading the file of Frank HOGAN, there seems to be considerable doubt on the part of James HOGAN and the Department as to whether the deceased soldier is or is not their son.
Soldier's father's (NOK) address is all wrong and there is no sign that Mary and James HOGAN were ever in Bendigo. Father James HOGAN states by letter has lived in Lonsdale street for many years.

Thank you everyone, just does not seem to fit with my family at all.
-
Why did you think she was born in NZ?
-
Well, I'm engaging in a bit of guesswork here.
Born 1838, Edward Anthony LOGAN (of full age) married Hannah HILL ( of full age)in 1859 n England.
He was an engineer on the record.
It is unlikely that a woman marrying in 1859 will be producing children in 1889, so Mary Eveline was not her child.
Are you thinking there was another relationship in New Zealand for Edward Anthony LOGAN?
Sue

the Edward Logan I found with daughter Evelyn Annie b 1899 and wife Annie appears to have been a carter in Christchurch for at least 5 years 1885 - 1890

The information on the 1909 marriage for Mary Eveline to Geo STEWART should be very useful.

the Edward Logan I found with daughter Evelyn Annie b 1899 and wife Annie appears to have been a carter in Christchurch for at least 5 years 1885 - 1890
And the one who I have "guessed at" died in 1904 as stated by OP, and Hannah, his widow was left administration of his estate according to the Probate Calendar , UK.
Sue
-
Also if E.A.Logan was born in 1838 and died in 1904 that would make him 66 years.
However the GRO has this:
LOGAN, EDWARD 77 years
GRO Reference: 1904 J Quarter in EPPING Volume 04A Page 195
This man born in 1827?
So the age is out by 10 years by the OP?

According to a submitted tree at Ancestry, Mary Eveline’s half brother, in 1926, died at age 66, at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. It has him as ALfred Edward LOGAN, born 11 April 1860, Southampton, Hampshire, England, with parents as Edward Anthony LOGAN 1838-1904 and Hannah HILL 1833-1907. That tree has Mary as born 1889, New Zealand, and died 1927, West Melbourne Victoria, Australia but NO sources.
AND … Vic BDM ONLINE index has Alfred Edward LOGAN’s 1926 death indexed #2938 with parents as Edward LOGAN and Hannah HILL.

Well, Consistently through the England censuses, Hannah LOGAN (nee HILL) gives an age consistent with a birth year of 1833.
So, as mentioned, she was not the mother of Mary.
No child of the name Mary Eveline ever appears with the LOGAN family on the census material.
