My Mother's maiden name was Gasser. Her father's family was from Winchester. Interested in when this name first appeared in the area
-
Welcome to RootsChat! ;D
There are 15 Gasser people on the 1841 census in Hampshire - all in Winchester & Hursley.
Earliest date of birth is 1781.
Parish records will take you back further.

From FreeREG;
Earliest Gasser Marriages I can find;
Ellen GASSER /Thomas BAILEY 16 Aug 1824, Hampshire, Winchester : St Maurice
Mary Ann CASTOR /James GASSER 24 Feb 1834, Hampshire Winchester : St Maurice
1851/1861 Census James Gasser is born c 1803/4 Staffordshire
1851 Ellen Bailey is born c 1806 Southampton, Hampshire, her Husband Thomas from Staffs and they are living there.
(her christening is on Familysearch.Org as Eleanor 1805 to James/Rebecca)
She is the earliest Gasser christening on F/S. Org I can find 1770-1810
Her Parents appear to be;
James GASSER/Rebecca SHORTER who married 18 Feb 1803 Cannock, Staffs
(FreeREG)
Her Father may still be alive in 1841;
James Gasser, 60, China Shop Keeper, Dealer, not born in County
Sarah Gasser, 31
Geo Painter, 4
I did not look at possisble variants of the surname eg Gassor
Others may be able to help more.

Thanks, Trish. My great-great grandad was born 1821

Hi,
Lookng at the transcripts the first baptism I can see at Winchester is a William in 1815. The first in the wider area is an Eleanor at Southampton in 1805.

Thank you, Peter. That confirms my hunch that the Gassers came to England from Germany at the end of the 18th century. We may never know why.
-
I dont think you can be conclusive about that. The surname may have had variants eg Gassor.
There were Gasser's in Staffordshire mid 1750's and a Gessyer Bapt Berkshire 1582.
(FreeREG)
Just searching Familysearch.Org, any event, Gasser, 1700-1800 brings up entries in several counties and that is without variants of the surname.
Trish :)

That's really interesting. My Grandad's family had no idea that their name was of German origin. I learned about it in the 1950s.

As I have found family stories are just that, stories!
There seems to be at this stage no evidence James Gasser was born anywhere other than in England.
I'll leave it at that, cheers,
