Can someone do a marriage lookup for me at Guernsey?
George Knight was a soldier in the 3rd Royal Veteran Battalion on Jersey.
He had 7 children born on Jersey. He died in 1834 St.Helier.
I cannot find a marriage for him on Jersey. Could there be one on Guernsey between about 1800 and 1804.
Thank You
regards
Lorayne

Dear Rosie
Thank you for that. I had found that one. I just thought there might be a marriage closer to the birth of first child which I have as Sarah b.1804 at St. Lawrence, Jersey.

Do you have any Army service records for George.
-
Yes I have all his army records from FindMyPast.

What information do they give about his service prior to 1804, ie was he serving away from Jersey
-
He was discharged from Chelsea hospital in 1800, unfit for active service as he had been wounded in 1796 in the West Indies. It looks like he joined the 3rd Royal Veteran Battalion after that. 1st child Sarah b. 1804 at St. Lawrence, Jersey. The Kent marriage could be them as I have found no other to match the time frame unless there wasn't one. I just thought it was a bit long from 1797 (if he was not in hospital) till 1804 when Sarah was born.

Thank you both very much for your replies.
The only thing that bothers me about the marriage at St. Lawrence, Thanet for George and Hester is that I am not sure he was in the country in 1797. He was wounded in the west Indies in 1796? and discharged at Chelsea Hospital in 1800, unfit for active service.
She is the only Hester that fits that time frame.

Could you please give a link to the record which shows him being discharged from Chelsea. Too many George Knight records to wade through looking for it ;D
-
His records are at FindMyPast British Army records. There are 3 for him. 2 for Royal Veterans Batt. and 1 for Inniskilling 27th of Foot. Discharged from the 27th of Foot in 1800 and Discharged from the Royal Vet. Batt. in 1814. At Jersey. I don't think he was in the country in 1797, but I may be wrong.
-
Do they give soldier numbers - where and when was he born
-
Born Uley, Dursley, Gloucestershire. B. 1774 or 1 says 1754 but it is the same person. Quite detailed, however they do vary slightly, but obviously the same man.
-
Thank you ;D
I think that the record dated 14 July 1800 indicates that he has was discharged from the Army on that date as he was injured and not fit for service.
It states that he is discharged and recommended as a worthy object for the Benefit of Chelsea Hospital - In other words he has been recommended to receive a pension from Chelsea Hospital ie a Chelsea Pensioner
-
It looks as though Inniskilling 27 Foot were in France around the time he was serving
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27th_(Inniskilling)_Regiment_of_Foot
-
There is a statement of his service abroad amongst these records that says he served in the West Indies from Dec. 1795 to Dec. 1797.
-
Britain was at war with France in the West Indies at St. Lucia in 1796.
-
I wonder where he would have been returned to when he was injured :-\
-
Possibly Hospital?
-
It might be worth posting on the Military boards to see if anyone there has any suggestions as to which medical facility he could have be returned to. Probably somewhere in the South East of England :-\
-
Thanks for all that, Rosie.
-
So if in the West Indies until Dec 1797 that cant be the right Marriage in Oct 1797?
-
In one of his records it has
Statement of Service
21st Dec 1791 to 22 Dec 1799
Total Service 10 years
4 years in East or West Indies included in that service
I can't see any dates for his years there though :-\
Trish he was apparently wounded in 1796 (reply 9) so could have been back in Kent
-
Ok Rosie, thanks for that :)
-
Thank you both for all your replies. I do not think the marriage in Kent is the right one.
His army record (3) have him being out of the country in Oct. 1797. So back to the drawing board.

So are you saying Guernsey or Jersey her. I am a bit confused. I am in Guernsey can go to the library maybe next week if you like but just checking I am not on a wild goose chase first? :)
-
Dear Maz
Thank you for your reply.
I am looking for a marriage of George Knight and Hester/Esther ?
As nothing suitable comes up in England I wondered if it could be on Guernsey. They had7 children on Jersey, but I could not find a marriage there. It would be between about 1800 and 1804.
Of course they may be no marriage.
Thanks again for your kind offer.
Regards
Lorayne

Do you have any idea of birth year and or where
-
Dear Maz
Most of the info for George Knight is on the preceding posts. I know nothing about Hester at all.
