Annie Viret married William Lant Carpenter 1841-1890 in Q June 1868 in Clifton.
Herbert Lant Carpenter 1874-1923 and Henry Cort Carpenter 1875-1940 were sons from the marriage.
Annie Carpenter appears to be living alone in Clevedon in the 1881 census. There's an Annie Viret 49 in the 1891 census living in Fulham. Could this be our Annie?
???
I'd like to know what happened to her. Family records have not recorded a date of death.
Thanks
Richard

William Carpenter divorced her petition filed 24 February 1881, decree nisi awarded 4 April 1881,
William has custody of the children, final decree was granted 25 April 1882.
Adultery with dates and places named in an affidavit, the man was a Robert Latham and in 1881, Annie and Robert were living at 32 Southwark Street, Cambridge Terrace, Middlesex. This would have been April 1881.
-
Thank you very much. What a scandal! :o
I wonder if Annie married Mr Latham?

Looking at the 1881 Census
Paddington
St John Paddington
District 13a
32 Southwick Street (next to: 38 Cambridge Terrace) is a Lodging House owned by Sarah JAMES aged 60
and is next door to 38 Cambridge Terrace
? so assumed Robert & Annie were staying at this lodging house
other places mentioned : Spread Eagle Hotel, Gloucester and Golden Cross Hotel, Charing Cross.
-
Hmm. I have yet to find a 1881 census record for Annie and Robert together.
The 1881 census record that I'd already found for Annie Carpenter in Clevedon still seems to fit.

I'm inclined to go with the 1881 that you found rkive.
I found an Anne Viret in the 1851 census living at Campbell Farm, Westbury-on-Trym, Clifton
Registration District is Clilfton
Piece number 1955
Folio 191
Page 14
Couple of birth registrations that fit the birthplaces given in the 1851
VIRET, ANN HARPER
GRO Reference: 1842 M Quarter in ST JAMES CLERKENWELL Volume 03 Page 97
VIRET, MARY ANN HARPUR
GRO Reference: 1845 M Quarter in THAME UNION Volume 16 Page 131
The other Viret is referred to as Sophia. I see from the image that the two girls are down as Adopted Child. I cannot see any birth registration for Sophia that fits date and place wise.
-
A death for Sophia - it is Sophia on Find My Past - presumably the transcriber for Freebmd couldn't quite read the name.
Deaths Sep 1879
Viret Sophie 35 Barton R. 6a 39
There is a probate record for Sophia - 1 September 1879 - The will of Sophia Viret formerly of 11 Princes Buildings but late of 110 Pembroke Road both in Clifton in the City and County of Bristol Spinster who died 17 August 1879 at 110 Pembroke Road, was proved at Bristol by Russell Forbes Carpenter of 56 Regent's Park Road, Regent's Park, in the County of Middlesex, Gentleman, and William Lant Carpenter of 110 Pembroke Road, Gentleman, the executors.
William was Annie's husband so presumably kept in touch with what I assume was his sister-in-law.

Reading the Divorce Papers: dated 21 February 1881 William Lant CARPENTER has written he is living at Winifred House, 110 Pembroke Road, County in the County of Somerset - and cohabited there with his Wife, also at 12 Brighton Park, Oakfield Road, Clifton, Bristol.
Sophia VIRET (Ancestry has her as Veral VIRET) is on the 1871 census living at 11 Princess Buildings with her mother Hannah Mary REYNOLDS and is would seem both, Ann and Sophia were adopted - according to census returns.
Assume this is Sophia's baptism at Tetsworth, Oxford : 26 February 1843
parents: Charles & Mary Ann VIRET - died
(tree on Ancestry) - and the two sisters, Ann and Sophia (VIRCH) on the 1851 census are living in Westbury on Trym with Governess, Elizabeth ALLMAN - with notes 'Heads from home'.
Brother Charles (born 1840) later Probate mentions his sister Sophia in Bristol.
-
Thanks very much for your input.
I'll add Sophia to my tree.

What happened to Annie after the divorce still remains a mystery.
The 1891 census record for Annie G Viret - what do you make of that?
Richard (on PST)
-
That 1891 census you have looks good. Looking at the image reveals the head to be Sister Superior in charge of Diocesan Penitentiary.
Annie is listed as an assistant embroideress, widow, age 49, birthplace London.
There is a death record for her husband as below:-
Deaths Dec 1890
Carpenter William Lant 49 Hendon 3a 130
There is a probate record for him in 1891.
-
Thank you.
So where did Annie (Grace?) Carpenter née Viret go after 1891?
???
Annie, Sophia and brother Charles have records on the GRO with mother's maiden name Harper, but ..
Another tree on Anc***** has their mother as Mary Ann Cort. Cort is a name that appears later in the family, so this is credible, but is she the same person as Ms Harper?
Charles Viret Sr and Mary Ann Cort were born around 1802 so they could quite easily have been married before.
There's also a marriage record for a Charles Viret and a Mary Linders in Tetsworth, Oxfordshire in 1840.
Hmmm

Don't know if it is significant but there is a passport application in April 1896 for a Mrs. A. Viret. Is this Annie or someone else? ::)
There is also one for an Annie Viret on 13 October 1859 no. 11854. Not well up on passports so don't know if it is possible to view the original application.

There is a death record for her husband as below:-
Deaths Dec 1890
Carpenter William Lant 49 Hendon 3a 130
There is a probate record for him in 1891.
He committed suicide, there are a few newspaper articles online
-
The Petition of William Lant CARPENTER gives date/place of marriage to Ann - and also the children's dob -
Marriage:
4 April 1868 lawfully married Anne CARPENTER then Annie VIRET Spinster, at the Unitarian Church Oakfield Road, Clifton, Bristol in the County of Gloucester.
First lived with his said Wife at 12 Brighton Park, Oakfield Road, Clifton Bristol, in the County of Somerset and then Winifred House, 110 Pembroke Road, Clifton.
4 children
Herbert Lant Viret CARPENTER born 5th day of February 1874
Henry (crossed out) Harold Henry CORT CARPENTER born the 6 day of February 1875
Hannah Mary Reynolds CARPENTER born the 13th day of January 1876
Mary Louisa CARPENTER born the 3rd day of April 1878 (all of whom are still living)
-
I'm looking again at the parents of Annie, Sophia, Charles and Mary Ann (born and died 1845) Viret -
Charles Viret and Mary Ann.
I haven't found a marriage record for a Mary Ann Harper/Harpur/Cort.
In fact, I haven't seen the Cort connection at all. It's in the other tree on Anc*****.
???
Richard
P.S. The links I've seen referring to William Lant Carpenter's suicide require a subscription, so I haven't read a full account.
-
Sorry, in a bit of a rush, but looking at the GRO Index, the brother Charles VIRET, born 1840 in Thames Union could be the one
registered : D Qtr 1839, THAME UNION, Mother's maiden name: HARPER also Ann VIRET - mother's maiden name: HARPER 1842, London
-
"Annie, Sophia and brother Charles have records on the GRO with mother's maiden name Harper, but ..
Another tree on Anc***** has their mother as Mary Ann Cort. Cort is a name that appears later in the family, so this is credible, but is she the same person as Ms Harper?"
**
Yes. I have the four children with mmn Harper or Harpur.

On the 1851 census, Charles VERET, age 11 born Tetsworth, Bedfordshire, is in the London Orphan Asylum - Middlesex -
-
Thank you. I added that.
Here is a section of the Carpenter family tree that covers this branch. It's been cut and stitched. Not much info about Annie Viret though.
